CLEVELAND -- One member of the trio of Guardians players who were all injured within a few hours of each other returned as Cleveland wrapped up their series against the Seattle Mariners June 28 at Progressive Field with a 6-5 win.
The club activated outfielder Chase DeLauter and optioned Petey Halpin in Triple-A Columbus. Jose Ramirez (hamate bone) and Angel Martinez (foot), who were also injured around the same time, remain on the injured list.
Here's how the Guardians' win over the Mariners unfolded June 28.
Guardians beat the Mariners, win series
Cade Smith had to sweat a bit, but the Guardians beat the Mariners 6-5 to take the game and series.
Two singles put runners on the corners. With two outs, Travis Bazzana had a chance to end the game but threw a ball in the dirt, scoring a run before Smith induced the game-inning groundout to win it.
This is one of the better wins and series of the season for the Guardians to beat Seattle without Jose Ramirez.
Rhys Hoskins gives Guardians lead vs Mariners
The Guardians offense has come to life with a five-run eighth inning.
After DeLauter's score-tying single, Rhys Hoskins lined a ball down the left-field line that landed right on the chalk. It easily scored one run and led to a plate at the plate with DeLauter, who pulled off a terrific half-slide in which he avoided the bat, took a shot to the ribs and reached for the plate with his foot. Mitch Garver dropped the ball, allowing DeLauter to touch home plate.
Considering DeLauter just came off the IL with a ribs injury, it probably didn't feel great, but the Guardians are now up 6-4 in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Chase DeLauter ties Guardians-Mariners
After Travis Bazzana popped out, Chase DeLauter came through with a two-run, two-out single up the middle to tie it 4-4.
DeLauter was activated off the injured list a few hours ago. He's 2-for-5 today.
Guardians load bases in 8th vs Mariners
The Guardians have a golden opportunity to close the gap in the eighth inning.
Down 4-2 with one out in the eighth, Steven Kwan drew a walk to load the bases. He's the potential go-ahead run with Travis Bazzana coming to the plate.
Earlier in the inning, Daniel Schneemann singled home a run to make it 4-2.
The Mariners are turning to reliever Josh Simpson, who replaces Michael Rucker .
Eduard Bazardo , Mariners escape jam
With two runners in scoring position and two outs in the bottom of the sixth, the Guardians pinch-hit Patrick Bailey for Austin Hedges despite Rhys Hoskins and David Fry both available on the bench. In arguably the biggest at-bat of the game thus far, Bailey was struck out by Mariners Eduard Bazardo, and Seattle's 4-1 lead goes untouched.
Mariners extend lead vs Guardians bullpen
Shawn Armstrong 's tough stretch continued in the top of the sixth. Victor Robles singled and then stole both second and third. That led to Julio Rodriguez , who singled him home to give the Mariners a 4-1 lead.
Guardians, Mariners score
The Guardians loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth but were only able to scratch across one run, making it a 3-1 Mariners lead heading to the sixth inning.
With two on, Steven Kwan laid down a bunt and just beat the throw to first base, which required a Guardians challenge after he was originally called out.
Travis Bazzana followed with a sacrifice fly, bringing home Cleveland's first run of the day. But from there, Chase DeLauter and Kyle Manzardo were both retired via flyout, and Emerson Hancock and Seattle escaped with their lead in tact.
Mariners extend lead vs Guardians
The Mariners have made it a 3-0 advantage.
In the top of the third, Josh Naylor pulled a double down the right-field line for an RBI double, scoring Julio Rodriguez all the way from first. Randy Arozarena then grounded a ball to the left side that nearly hit Naylor as he advanced to third base. Guardians shortstop Brayan Rocchio appeared to get caught between decisions and airmailed his throw over first baseman Kyle Manzardo, allowing Naylor to jog home.
Guardians, Mariners score update
The Mariners have struck first in this rubber match.
In the top of the second inning, Mitch Garver lined a single to right field to score Cal Raleigh from second base, giving Seattle a 1-0 lead.
The Guardians weren't able to score the equalizer in the bottom half of the inning. With runners on second and third and two outs, Austin Hedges hit a flyout to left field.
