The NCAA has denied Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby ‘s request to reinstate his eligibility for the upcoming season, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel . If Sorsby is barred from playing collegiately again, he’ll likely become available in the NFL’s Supplemental Draft, where the Pittsburgh Steelers could pick him up.
Sorsby, who transferred to join the Red Raiders after a big season at Cincinnati , recently completed his 35-day in-patient rehab for a gambling addiction.
Texas Tech president Lawrence Schovanec wrote in a release that the school will be appealing the NCAA’s ruling, saying, “We believe that given the facts and the context of Brendan’s case, the NCAA’s ruling should be reversed or modified. As a generation of college athletes face the legalization and rapid proliferation of sports betting in our country, gambling addiction is rising to the point of epidemic among college aged men in particular.”
Schovanec pointed to the NCAA’s stated mission, which claims a goal of promoting a “culture of care” for student-athletes’ mental health. Gambling addiction, Schovanec said, is a “clinically recognized behavorial disorder.”
Sorsby’s deadline to apply for the supplemental draft is June 22. Aaron Rodgers will operate the Steelers’ offense this upcoming season, and Pittsburgh also currently rosters three other signal-callers — Mason Rudolph , Will Howard and Drew Allar .
Sorsby had been tabbed as a possible first-round talent in next year’s NFL Draft. The NFL Mock Draft Database currently lists him as the No. 9 passer in his class. Sorsby threw for 2,800 yards and 27 touchdowns last season. He also rushed for 580 yards and nine more touchdowns.
