One thing has become increasingly clear over the last several years: the NFL is fully committed to globalizing the game. The Pittsburgh Steelers
are no exception, as they've officially been scheduled to face the New Orleans Saints
in Paris this season, marking the second consecutive year Pittsburgh will play internationally.
While these games continue to expand the NFL's reach and grow the league's international fanbase, they've also sparked growing concerns from players around the league. Former NFL star J. J. Watt
recently weighed in on the issue, expressing frustration with the increasing burden international games can place on players throughout the season.
"International game slate is nearing the realm of traveling circus as opposed occasional showcase," Watt wrote on X .
Watt is likely far from alone in that thinking. From the outside, international games may seem like a minor inconvenience, but for players already battling through the physical and mental grind of an NFL season, the added travel can become significant. Long flights, jet lag, time-zone adjustments, unfamiliar routines, and different playing conditions all create additional obstacles during a season that is already demanding enough.Regardless of where fans stand on the issue, international games are clearly becoming a larger part of the NFL's future. The league continues prioritizing overseas expansion, and teams like Pittsburgh are increasingly becoming part of that effort.
There's also a business side to the discussion. Whenever an NFL team gives up a home game overseas, there's revenue left behind locally. Ticket sales, parking, concessions, and stadium-related income all take a hit when a game is moved out of the country.
Still, not every player views the experience negatively. Steelers linebacker Patrick Queen spoke positively about Pittsburgh's international trip last season.
"It's awesome, to be honest with you. I don't know if we're going to be able to come back, but I hope we do. It was an incredible experience," Queen said.
As the NFL continues pushing toward a larger global audience, it'll be interesting to see whether more players begin voicing concerns similar to Watt's or if international games simply become the new normal across the league.
