PHILADELPHIA — Joe Mazzulla spent time at Fenway Park earlier this month with Alex Cora amid a slow start by the Red Sox.
"Culture and mindset," Mazzulla said was the topic of that conversation on 98.5 The Sports Hub. "That's where it's great being able to be around the other sports teams in the city because we are all going through the same thing as far as responsibility and the ownership and the expectation to win but we are all on different parts of that."
Ultimately, that slow start ended up being too much for Cora to overcome. The Red Sox fired Cora on Saturday evening after a 10-17 start to the Red Sox season. Cora was in the midst of his eighth season as manager before being let go and had built a strong connection with Joe Mazzulla during his four seasons as Celtics head coach.
Mazzulla spoke candidly about Cora ahead of the Celtics' Game 4 matchup against the 76ers on Sunday night.
"He's great," Mazzulla said. "He does a great job building relationships with the players, navigating the ebbs and flows of a long season, staying even-keeled. Grateful that I've gotten to learn from him. Wherever he goes, I know he'll be good. He does a great job building relationships, communication, learned a ton from him."
In his pregame interview with Sean Grande on 98.5 The Sports Hub, Mazzulla also expanded on how much of an impact that Cora has had on him.
"I watched a lot of his pressers and how he was able to just convey consistency, whether they were playing well or whether they weren't. So, grateful to know him wherever he goes, I've definitely gotten better because of him."
With Cora being let go, Mazzulla is now the longest-tenured Boston head coach. He has gone 238-90 in his four seasons at the helm in Boston.
