The Toronto Blue Jays have endured ups and downs this year. The Blue Jays have dealt with injuries and underperformance. At 27-29, Toronto is currently in third place in the American League East standings. One player who has performed consistently well for the Blue Jays in 2026 is reliever Louis Varland , who recently received a bold claim from manager John Schneider , via MLB Network Radio.
“I think he’s right up there with one of the best relievers in the game right now,” Schneider said. “… He’s really blossomed into an elite reliever. I put him in in the highest leverage spots that I can.”
Varland, 28, has been incredible this season. The right-handed hurler has pitched to a stellar 0.31 ERA in his 26 appearances on the mound. Varland has seven saves as well.
In all reality, Varland is a reliever who could find success in multiple roles. He clearly has what it takes to close games, but he can be a weapon in the 7th or 8th innings as well if necessary.
Schneider clearly appreciates everything Varland offers the ball club. Toronto understands that Varland has played a pivotal role in the bullpen.
The Blue Jays need other players to step up, but they certainly will not complain about Louis Varland’s performance so far during the 2026 MLB season.
Toronto has gone 6-4 over its past 10 games. The Blue Jays most recently defeated the Miami Marlins by a final score of 2-1 on Wednesday. On Thursday, the team will begin a four-game series against the Orioles in Baltimore . First pitch for the contest on Thursday night is scheduled for 6:35 PM EST.
