The New York Mets have continued to struggle this year. They lost again on Sunday to the Arizona Diamondbacks , and the offense is second-to-last in the majors in batting average. Their star player, Juan Soto, is hitting just .121 in May , and the team is now just 15-25.
Now, baseball insider Ken Rosenthal is taking aim at Mets GM David Stearns for his roster construction , appearing on Fair Territory with Ken Rosenthal.
"Their roster construction is going to be a question until we see better performance," Rosenhal started. "Well, going into the season, it wasn't exactly a secret that Luis Robert Jr. had an injury history. Jorge Polanco played last year and played very well for the Seattle Mariners , but he, too, has an injury history. And then you look at the Marcus Semien trade, and we all understood what the Mets were doing, getting rid of five years of Nimmo's contract to take on three years of Semien's. Okay, but the problem is Semien hasn't hit since 2023."
Luis Robert Jr. has played just 24 of the team's 40 games so far, and is hitting just .224 with eight RBIs. Meanwhile, Polanco has played in usut 14 games, hitting .179. Semien has played in all 40 games, but is hitting just .225 this year.
"So the Mets are in this funky place where their offense is simply not what you expect from a $370 million payroll," Rosenthal continued.
So far, $370 million has resulted in a team that has scored 139 runs, which is 29th in the majors, and hitting .222, also 29th. The team is also 30th in on-base percentage and slugging this year.
"The Mets' five through nine in the lineup yesterday: Marcus Semien, Andy Ibanez , Tyrone Taylor , Carson Benge, who has been much better lately as a rookie, and in the ninth spot, Luis Torrens . That's a lineup you might see in a… split-squad game in Florida," Rosenthal concluded.
If the Mets continue to put out fringe major league players, they will get those results, but signing a ton of players with injury history and hoping for the best is not a formula for success, and Rosenthal is ripping Stearns for trying it.
