Lionel Messi 's World Cup opener against Algeria quickly became the kind of performance that does not stay inside the stadium for long.
Argentina 's 3-0 win was built entirely around their captain, who scored all three goals and turned the night into another milestone chapter in his international career.

The reaction soon moved from the pitch to social media, where fans rushed to find the latest clips, stats, and debates around his performance. That rush came at exactly the wrong moment for one of X's most-used features.

Lionel Messi's hat-trick draws level with Miroslav Klose in World Cup history
Messi's hat-trick gave Argentina the perfect start to their title defense and pushed him even further into the tournament's record books.
The three goals took Messi to 16 career World Cup goals, equalling Miroslav Klose for the most in men's tournament history. It was also his first World Cup hat-trick, delivered in his sixth appearance at the tournament.

The performance was more than just numbers. Messi gave Argentina control, set the tone for Group J and turned the opener into a record night before the tournament had even settled.
It also sparked the kind of online wave that only a few athletes can create. Once the hat-trick was complete, fans were not just reacting to Argentina's win, they were trying to place Messi's latest achievement in World Cup history.
Lionel Messi's hat-trick appears to break the X search feature
After Messi's third goal, X's search feature appeared to struggle as fans flooded the platform for updates, highlights and reaction.

Search attempts were met with a "Something went wrong, try again" error. While there is no direct proof that Messi alone caused the issue, the timing made it feel like part of the wider reaction to his performance.
It was another reminder of how quickly Messi can take over the online conversation. A hat-trick in a World Cup opener is already a huge story, but matching Klose's record gave it the kind of historic pull that drives global search traffic within minutes.
That is the scale of Messi's influence in 2026. He can decide a match, move level with the World Cup's greatest scoring mark and make social media feel overloaded in the same night.
