BATON ROUGE — Flau'jae Johnson tried.
The LSU women's basketball star guard took over the game against South Carolina in spurts on a few occasions. The senior put up 21 points and willed the Tigers back into the game in the fourth quarter.
But as the game twisted and turned in the later stages, the shots LSU made in the first half refused the fall. And the free-throw line jumped up to bite LSU as Johnson missed three of her final four foul attempts, including two straight with 45 seconds left that would've given LSU the lead.
LSU-SOUTH CAROLINA PREDICTION. WHO WINS? Will LSU women's basketball beat South Carolina? Our prediction
The Tigers trailed by as many as eight in the second half. They chipped it to one three times, but they couldn't get over the hump as No. 3-ranked South Carolina escaped No. 6 LSU and the Pete Maravich Assembly Center again with a 79-72 victory Saturday, Feb. 14.
Thanks to Tessa Johnson, who LSU (22-4, 8-4 SEC) struggled to find an answer for, South Carolina was able to find enough on the offensive end to routinely build five-, six-, seven-point leads. Tessa Johnson finished the game with 21 points.
LSU won the rebounding battle but the 29.3% shooting percentage in the second half was too much to overcome against South Carolina (25-2, 11-1).
This is the second game against a top-5 team that the Tigers have dropped and they remain outside the top four in the SEC standings.
