The Seattle Mariners are 18-20 heading into a series with the Chicago White Sox on Mother's Day Weekend. It is not the start they were hoping for after losing in Game 7 of the ALCS to end last season. But now, they have a chance to turn it around as key offseason acquisition Brendan Donovan is coming back from a groin injury.
"Mariners roster move…Brendan Donovan (left groin muscle strain) has been activated from the 10-day IL and will be in lineup tonight in Chicago. In a corresponding move, Jhonny Pereda has been optioned to Triple-A Tacoma," Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reported.
Donovan was traded from the St Louis Cardinals to the Mariners in the offseason. Before the injury, Donovan was acclimating well to his new climate. The second baseman is hitting .304 with a .954 OPS and eight RBI in 18 games.
Donovan is not the only injury the Mariners are managing right now. Bryce Miller is set to join the rotation for the first time this season due to an oblique strain, and Cal Raleigh missed a few games with side soreness . For both the Mariners and the Blue Jays, injuries have been the story this season. That is starting to turn around in Seattle.
The Mariners may be off to a slow start, but so is most of the American League. They are only 1.5 games back of the Athletics and in second place in the AL West. Getting these injured players back bodes well for the M's, as they can get hot before the rest of the AL gets itself together.
It will be Emerson Hancock against Sean Burke on the Southside on Friday night to start the Mariners-White Sox series.
