Mark DeRosa was onlyRoman Anthony’smanager for a brief time during the World Baseball Classic. But the Boston Red Sox outfielder left quite the impression.
“This dude’s special,” DeRosa said on MLB Network . “Special make-up. Special approach at the dish. Loves the big moment. Not too big for him. Walks around with an aura and a presence.”
DeRosa said the Team USA veterans treated Anthony like a rookie and had him carrying a large Bose speaker around. The coaching staff asked if he wanted help.
“Don’t you dare,” DeRosa said of Anthony’s response .
DeRosa then reflected on a conversation he had with the 21-year-old.
“He said listen: ”Analytics has broken into the game in a big way. And in the minor leagues, guys are obsessed with barrel, exit velos, regardless of what their raw numbers look like,” DeRosa said . “He said, that stuff will get you to the big leagues. But I’ve realized once I’ve been here, the only thing is, can you get on base or not?”
“For a 21-year-old kid to say that, he’s super mature.”
Anthony will begin his first full MLB season Thursday when the Red Sox open their season on the road against the Cincinnati Reds . After his season ended prematurely in 2025 due to an oblique injury and his strong showing in the World Baseball Classic , there is a lot of hype around the kind of season Anthony will have in 2026 .
