Closer Devin Williams and the New York Mets dropped their 11th-straight game on Sunday, falling to the Chicago Cubs 2-1. Now, manager Carlos Mendoza has found himself in hot water .
Williams doesn't think New York's struggles fall solely on Mendoza though. Ultimately, he knows everyone on the Mets need to step up, via SNY.
"It's absolutely on us. He doesn't swing a bat and he doesn't throw a baseball. We've been in a lot of these games," Williams said. "It's been close."
"Him or somebody else is not affecting that," he continued. "If we're not getting the job done, somebody else isn't going to just magically flip a switch and we're going to get it done. He's putting guys in good positions. We're not performing."
The Mets held a 1-0 lead entering the ninth inning. But then Michael Conforto hit an RBI double, off of Williams to tie the game. The closer ended the inning with two straight strike outs, but the damage had already been done.
After the Mets went down in order in the top of the 10th, a pass ball allowed Pete Crow-Armstrong to advance to third base. Nico Hoerner then brought him in on a sacrifice fly, winning the game 2-1 and extending New York's losing streak.
To Williams' point, the Mets last two losses to the Cubs came by two runs of fewer. Still, all the matters is the final tally in the record book. The closer hasn't been doing his new team any favors, as Williams holds a 7.11 ERA over his seven appearances.
Still, he and the entire franchise will need a way to find their footing. As it stands, Mendoza will be the one attempting to lead New York back to prominence. But things can change in a hurry if the Mets continue to struggle.
