The 2026 World Cup is beginning to grow dramatic as we present a prediction and pick for this upcoming Round of 16 tilt between tournament heavyweights. Mexico will host England from Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, Mexico. Check our World Cup odds series for the Mexico-England prediction and pick.
Mexico is a perfect 4-0-0 through this FIFA World Cup and they have yet to concede a goal. After winning their Group A, they most recently eliminated Ecuador soundly 2-0 to win their first knockout stage game since 1986. They come in the slight underdogs against England with the entire country and stadium behind them.
England advanced as winners of Group L with a 2-1-0 record (7 pts), most recently dispatching Congo DR 2-1 in the Round of 32. While they trailed for most of that game, Harry Kane saved the day with two late goals (75′, 86′) as England advances to its third-straight Round of 16. The nation still awaits it's first World Cup win since 1966, having to overcome a serious obstacle in Mexico if they want to keep their hopes alive.

England:Forward Bukayo Saka continues to deal with slight injury as he's only been able to start one match during this tournament. Midfielder Declan Rice was also rested against Panama and was dealing with hamstring issues against Congo DR, his fitness remaining questionable ahead of this tilt. Finally, and most importantly, defender Reece James sat out the last game and is racing to start in this game with a recurring hamstring issue.

Keys to Mexico vs. England Matchup
Both of these teams have done what has been expected of them throughout this tournament, both winning their groups and advancing through the first knockout game as the favorites to do so. Mexico has been much more impressive in terms of their dominance and although they faced a pool of South Africa , South Korea , and Czechia during the group stages, they dominated against Ecuador as goalkeeper Raul Rangel continues his clean sheet.
England, on the other hand, notably stunned fans with their 0-0 draw against Ghana in the group stages. Fans were even more stunned to see their team down 0-1 heading into the 75th minute against Congo DR only to be saved by veteran and captain Harry Kane . Kane was heroic in his performance, being in the right place at the right time once again towards the end of regulation. Belgium faced a similar comeback as the England squad completely turned up the heat by the 70th-minute mark, growing their confidence in scoring whenever they need to in closing a game out.
Still, it won't be likely that England will see that quick offensive production at the drop of a hat against Mexico, who remain as the only team alongside Spain to not allow a goal in this World Cup so far. They're far more defensively-minded and aside from their opening game against South Africa, Mexico has not lead the possession minutes in any of their last three games. They pride themselves on the counter-attack and feature great athleticism around the box during set pieces, much like their opponents in England.
I believe the pro-Mexican crowd will have a huge factor on this game, not to mention the elevation (2,240 meters above sea level) that England will have to play against. Mounting a comeback with the added fatigue will only become more difficult as they'll already be making shifts during the second half to replace players. If Mexico can get out to an early lead in this one, they're one of the better equipped teams in the tournament to stave off a team like England.
Mexico vs. England Prediction and Pick
This game has all the makings of a classic and I expect a hard-fought match in the center of the pitch where goals will be at a premium. While England has shown great scoring ability throughout this tournament, they're wavering due to injuries and will face their best opponent up to this point. They can't afford a slow start as Mexico's defensive line will control this game with their pacing.
I expect an early goal from Mexico as they control possession for most of the first half. England will be in a comeback situation once again and could very well tie this game up and head to extras. However, the home crowd will be a huge advantage as I see Mexico outlasting England both in full-time and extra-time scenarios.
Final Mexico-England Round of 16 Prediction & Pick: Mexico (+115); UNDER 2.5 Goals (-175)
