Michigan basketball added a new celebration after beating UConn on Monday . The national champs claimed a College Basketball Transfer Portal victory Thursday. Even landing this Tennessee star amid rumors that Indiana and Kansas were courting him hard.
Former Volunteers big man J.P. Estrella chose the champs , per ESPN college basketball insider Pete Thamel.
"He continues the lineage of high-end transfer big men at Michigan , as they played an outsized line-up to win the national title," Thamel posted on the social media website X, formerly Twitter. "He's a former Top 70 recruit who was one of the most efficient players in the SEC this year, as he averaged 10.0 points and 5.4 rebounds in just over 18 minutes a game."
Thamel adds Estrella hands the Wolverines two more years of eligibility. But Michigan pulls off a significant portal coup.
Kansas rose as the early frontrunner for Estrella earlier on Thursday . The Jayhawks are seeking a replacement for Flory Bidunga , who entered the portal last Thursday but is also testing the NBA Draft waters.
The Wolverines still looked like a strong contender to land Estrella , though. Michigan must replace top bigs Yaxel Lendeborg and Aday Mara following this title run. Estrella now becomes an early contender to replace the former as the leading post scorer for Dusty May .
The Vols advanced to the Elite Eight for the third consecutive season, but fell to Michigan in lopsided fashion 95-62. Estrella scored seven points and added seven rebounds in the loss. Now he'll chase his first championship ring with the national title holders.
