FORT MYERS — It’s only fitting Caleb Durbin ended up on the Red Sox after a trade from the Milwaukee Brewers earlier this month.
Growing up, the 25-year-old idolized Dustin Pedroia .
“He was definitely one of my favorite players growing up. A guy I definitely try to model my game around,” Durbin said Wednesday at JetBlue Park. “Obviously, long way to go, but he was a dude that I really enjoyed watching.”
Pedroia’s size was often talked about during his time with the Red Sox . At 5-foot-9, the second baseman didn’t offer a lot of height, but he became a staple in Boston ’s infield, often making plays someone his size would struggle with.
Durbin, who’s two inches shorter than Pedroia, played a majority of his rookie season at third base, but also has experience at second and shortstop. It’s unclear where he’ll play in Boston.
Durbin hasn’t connected with Pedroia yet, but is looking forward to the opportunity to do so and get some pointers about how Pedroia morphed into a superstar despite his small stature.
I’m sure we’ll have a lot of conversations,“ he said. ”He’s a similar guy, similar profile to me as far as size goes. So a lot of conversation about stuff like that and how he was able to overcome a lot in his life and be a superstar. I only hope to be a little bit like that. So it’s definitely going to be fun talking to him."
