FORT MYERS — Roman Anthony was originally going to skip the World Baseball Classic this year. But there’s a possibility he’ll get the nod.
The Boston Red Sox outfielder is one of seven players who could be an injury replacement on Team USA for Arizona Diamondbacks ’ Corbin Carroll , MLB Network’s Jon Morosi reported Wednesday .
Carroll will miss the WBC with a broken hamate bone.
There were rumors about Anthony suiting up for Italy in this year’s tournament, but he wanted to play it safe after missing the final month of 2025 with an oblique injury.
“I would say that’s out of play,” Anthony said in January . “There’s a lot of noise that I’ve heard, but for me, the goal after this year was, ‘Hey, I ended on an injury. I don’t want to rush into something.’ I think this was on both ends, not just my side. This is gonna be the first full year of a big league season. It’s important we take advantage of spring and this offseason going into spring training.
“I would love to play in the WBC at some point. For who? I’m not sure,” he continued . “Obviously, Italy would be a great opportunity and a blast. For me, right now, the best thing is to go into this spring and take full advantage of my first spring training before my first full season in the big leagues.”
Anthony is already in Fort Myers ahead of the position players’ official report date.
The Red Sox have the following players going to the WBC: Garrett Whitlock (USA), Brayan Bello (Dominican Republic), Wilyer Abreu (Venezuela), Jarren Duran (Mexico), Ceddanne Rafaela (Netherlands), Jovani Morán (Puerto Rico), Greg Weissert (Italy), Masataka Yoshida (Japan) and Willson Contreras (Venezuela).
This year’s World Baseball Classic begins March 5 and concludes on March 17.
