The NHL has slammed the Las Vegas Golden Knights and coach John Tortorella for blowing off media obligations following their series-clinching win over the Anaheim Ducks .
According to reporters on the scene in Anaheim, the postgame situation was highly unusual.
"John Tortorella declined to speak with the media after advancing to the Western Conference finals," the Athletic's Jesse Granger wrote. "The Golden Knights also didn't open the dressing room after the game. They brought one player into a side room to speak, along with the two who spoke at the podium. I've been covering the NHL for nine years and never seen either of those happen once."
The league fined Tortorella $100,000 and the Golden Knights have been docked a second-round pick in next month's NHL Draft. In their explanation, the NHL made it clear that this week's actions weren't the first issue they've had with Las Vegas.
"The imposition of these penalties comes after previous warnings were issued to the club regarding their compliance with the media regulations and other associated policies," the league wrote.
Las Vegas can appeal these sanctions, but the hearing would be in person next week at the league office in New York. The Golden Knights were mum on everything after the discipline was announced.
"The Las Vegas Golden Knights are aware of today's announcement from the NHL regarding the postgame availability following Game 6 in Anaheim," the team wrote. "The organization will have no further comment."
