With the Baltimore Orioles sweeping the Tampa Bay Rays in the past series before the next slate of games against the Toronto Blue Jays , a big decision has been made regarding relief pitcher Albert Suarez . As the Orioles have been making moves , like designating Suarez for assignment once again, the pitcher has decided on his free agency.
According to Matt Weyrich, Suarez wants to test the waters of free agency after clearing waivers, which he'd rather do "than accept a minor league assignment." Weyrich mentions that Suarez has taken this path before, which ended with him coming back to Baltimore.
Having pitched in seven games, 19.2 innings this season, Suarez has recorded a 2.75 ERA with 10 strikeouts and a save, as even manager Craig Albernaz expressed how "outstanding" the pitcher has been.
"Whenever we call on him, he always seems like he eats up four to five innings on like 50 pitches. He throws strikes, he competes, he has no barrel fear, he doesn't care if he gets hit or not, and he keeps on attacking. That's something I love about him, always did, going back to our roots in Tampa Bay , but Suárez is an extremely valuable piece to what we do," Albernaz said, via MASN Sports.
Albert Suarez gets 'tremendous' praise from Orioles pitcher
Suarez has been a good arm for the Orioles, which could lead to some confusion over the team not wanting to retain him, especially with the praise in the clubhouse as reliever Yennier Cano said he's been "tremendous."
"Every time he's up here, he gives three, four quality innings. He goes out there and does his job every single time," Cano said.
"Unfortunately, that's the business of baseball, right? Where he's the one that keeps being sent out," Cano continued. "So I really do hope that some team gives him an opportunity to stay up and pitch. He's a great teammate, a great guy to be around, and obviously a great pitcher, as well."
At any rate, it remains to be seen what Suarez's future looks like in the MLB and if Baltimore will be his destination.
