With the San Diego Padres deciding to put Fernando Tatis Jr. at second base ahead of Saturday's game against the Colorado Rockies , the star has revealed his reaction to the change. With the Padres starting Tatis at second base for the first time , the 27-year-0ld went through when conversations started about this potential change and his preparation.
This was not a sudden decision by manager Craig Stammen , as Tatis said talks about this have been happening for some time now, and that "it was the best way to go for the team right now."
"We have been talking about it," Tatis said, via 97.3 The Fan. "I mean, there were talks, here and there in the offseason, but from talking to actually making it happen. Like, a couple of weeks back, we were talking about it, and we just find it was the best way to go for the team right now."
While Tatis usually plays right field and when he is in the infield, it's at shortstop, but with Xander Bogaerts having a routine off-day on Saturday, Jake Cronenworth moved to shortstop, with Tatis shifting to second.
"I can play wherever. I'm just here to play baseball and be a good baseball player," Tatis said.
In terms of what Stammen said to Tatis about the move, it's crediting the star for being an impeccable athlete.
"The manager said, you know, just be ready here and there and told me, I'm a really good athlete on the field, especially defensively, and I'm a piece that can be moved around," Tatis said.
At any rate, it remains to be seen how many games Tatis will play at second base as San Diego takes on Colorado in the third game of the series on Saturday.
