The Carolina Panthers are going into their offseason with two major losses from their first playoff appearance in eight years.
Saturday night's 34-31 defeat to the Los Angeles Rams saw left tackle Ikem Ekwonu make an early exit. Ekwonu was carted off the field in the first quarter with what head coach Dave Canales later described as a "significant" knee injury.
Canales spoke with reporters on Sunday afternoon and confirmed the early belief.
"Ickey has a ruptured patellar tendon, and it's gonna require surgery," he stated. "Timeline-wise, those times vary and all that. But it's significant, it's gonna require surgery.
"So prayers and thoughts for Ickey. Just battled for us and worked through some things along the season. Just a guy that I love, a guy that I really trust out there."
Ekwonu was replaced by Yosh Nijman following his departure.
Canales later added that the rupture is not related to the knee injury that sidelined Ekwonu for the team's Week 16 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers .
