Beginning the practice week without three major players is not exactly ideal, especially ahead of the biggest game of the season.
The Carolina Panthers held out three offensive starters from this afternoon's outing—wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan (foot/ankle), left tackle Ikem Ekwonu (knee) and left guard Damien Lewis (illness).
Head coach Dave Canales was asked about McMillan's ankle injury following the session, and told reporters that the setback occurred during Sunday's 20-17 loss to the New Orleans Saints .
"This was stuff that just came up in the game," Canales replied. "I think he got rolled up on on a run play, it looked like. Just kinda built up on him, and we just decided to keep him out of practice today and try to get him back tomorrow."
Canales also addressed Ekwonu's status.
"He made it through the game, he was battling out there," he stated. "And we can kinda sense that there was some stuff going on. But in the post-game evaluation, and started doing tests on him, there's something in there. There's something going on with his knee. So we had to make sure we took care of him today.
"He's gonna be day to day. We're gonna look at him tomorrow, see if we can get him out there to practice. But we're not really sure right now. We'll go through it, make sure we do all the testing that we need to and do the right thing by Ickey."
Starting defensive lineman Tershawn Wharton was a non-participant as well. The sixth-year veteran missed the Week 15 defeat due to a hamstring injury .
