Drake Maye continues to state his case to be the NFL’s MVP.
His coach, and his teammates, don’t have much doubt about who should win that award.
Following the Patriots 42-10 win over the Jets, aided by Maye’s five touchdown passes on as many possessions, Mike Vrabel & Co. assessed their quarterback’s chances to earn MVP honors.
“They don’t give me a vote, but there’s nobody else we want as our quarterback, or that I want as our quarterback,” Vrabel said. “To be able to do that (5 TD passes to 5 different players) . . . somebody asked me this week about progression and different things. I said just throw to the guy that’s open as soon as you go through your progression and I think he did that. There was some good (play) designs, but also good execution.”
Cornerback Christian Gonzalez gets a front row seat to watch the Maye show from the sideline.
He believes Maye, who completed 19 of 21 passes for 256 yards and the five TDs, should be the MVP.
“I think so. He goes out there and shows it every week,” Gonzalez said. “I think that’s something he’s earned. But I know him, and this team. We’re focused on winning games. If it happens to be him, (great), but we’re focused on winning games.”
Maye is in the top five in just about every important quarterback category be it completion percentage, yards, touchdowns, etc while leading the Patriots to a 13-3 record with one game to play.
LA’s Matthew Stafford , Buffalo’s Josh Allen , and Maye are considered the front-runners.
Efton Chism III , who caught his first touchdown pass in the rout, has no doubt who should win the award. He said he made sure to tell Maye what he feels about him as a quarterback.
“I think everyone sees how great he is, and how well he’s playing,” Chism said. “He’ll probably never say it about himself. He’s a humble guy. I respect that and appreciate that about him. If I get the opportunity to tell him (how great he is), I’m going to tell him.”
Running back Rhamondre Stevenson , who also caught one of Maye’s five TD passes, talked about Maye’s MVP mindset after the win.
“He kind of wants to win the game on Wednesdays and throughout the week, before we get to Sunday, and I think that’s a big thing for him, and the team,” Stevenson said. “Putting our best foot forward to reap the rewards on Sunday.”
