The Patriots were busy on Tuesday, making four practice squad additions while releasing two players ahead of their AFC Division game .
New England signed cornerback, Miles Battle , running back D’Ernest Johnson, tackle Lorenz Metz and wide receiver Trent Sherfield Sr. to its practice squad.
Defensive lineman Fabien Lovett and wide reciever Brandon Smith were released.
Johnson was released by the Patriots on Monday. The veteran running back appeared in seven games, rushed for 25 yards and returned five kickoffs for 128 yards.
Battle originally joined New England’s practice squad for the 2024 season. He made his NFL debut in Week 18 against the Buffalo Bills on Jan. 5, 2025. After he was released at the end of training camp over the summer, he re-signed to the practice squad. The 25-year-old appeared in five games, and was among those released last week.
Metz spent the 2024 and 2025 seasons on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers practice squad via the International Player Pathway Program. He has yet to make his NFL debut.
Sherfield, an eight-year NFL veteran, spent the 2025 season with the Denver Broncos and the Arizona Cardinals . In total he played in 12 games and had three receptions for 21 yards.
The Patriots have two players on injured reserve who are eligible to return for Sunday’s game — cornerback Alex Austin and running back Terrell Jennings .
With a spot to fill on the roster, Austin could be an option for the Patriots, especially if Christian Gonzalez (concussion) is unable to play against the Houston Texans .
