The Philadelphia Phillies announced two roster moves before their game on Tuesday night against the Pittsburgh Pirates .
"Prior to tonight's game against the Pittsburgh Pirates, the Phillies selected the contract of RHP Lou Trivino from triple-A Lehigh Valley. He will wear No. 22. To make room on the 26-man roster, RHP Chase Shugart was optioned to Lehigh Valley," the team announced.
Trivino, 34, is a veteran relief pitcher. He has previously spent time with the Athletics , New York Yankees , San Francisco Giants , Los Angeles Dodgers , Baltimore Orioles and the Phillies at the MLB level.
The right-handed hurler began his career in 2018 with the A's and established himself as one of the better relievers in baseball. Trivino was acquired by the Yankees in 2022 and he helped New York during its postseason run.
He did not pitch in 2023 due to injury. Trivino has not found as much success since returning from injury, but he still is a capable veteran. The 34-year-old most recently appeared at the MLB level with the Baltimore Orioles in 2026.
Trivino will provide bullpen depth for Philadelphia as the pitching staff deals with injuries . Overall, the Phillies are now only 3.5 games behind the Atlanta Braves for first place in the National League East standings. Atlanta held a big lead early in the season, but the Phillies' recent success has them sitting in a respectable position.
The Phillies are set to host the Pirates on Tuesday night at 6:40 PM EST as they look to bounce back after losing 11-7 to Pittsburgh on Monday.
