Phillies trade pitcher to Guardians with latest move appeared first on ClutchPoints . Add ClutchPoints as a Preferred Source by clicking here .
Both the Philadelphia Phillies and Cleveland Guardians have spent a good portion of the year living in the shadow of divisional rivals. The Atlanta Braves looked like the best team in baseball for a time and have controlled the National League East for nearly the entire season, and the Chicago White Sox have been MLB's feel-good story of the campaign to this point. That does not bother the Phils and Guards, though. Those two franchises are just staying the course, and that mindset has enabled them to converge on the Fourth of July. Philly is trading pitcher Ryan Degges to Cleveland.
The Phillies will receive $250,000 in international pool money , per the GuardsInsider X account, which could help the organization build for the future.
The two ballclubs announced the move hours before their respective Saturday night matchups. Degges, a right-hander who was selected in the 17th round of the 2024 MLB Draft, is still working his way through the minor leagues. He recorded a 4.79 ERA and 27 strikeouts in 20 2/3 innings pitched for the High-A Jersey Shore BlueClaws and posted a 9.00 ERA through four innings of work with the Single-A Clearwater Threshers.
Considering his draft standing and rough numbers, it is easy to just dismiss the Ryan Degges acquisition. The Guardians have earned a significant amount of trust when it comes to player evaluation, however. Perhaps they see something that nobody else does.
It will be a while before fans learn about the outcome of this trade, as attention stays firmly on the present. Philadelphia (49-39), who begins the day three games behind Atlanta in the NL East, is set to battle the last-place Kansas City Royals in Kauffman Stadium at 8:10 p.m. ET. Clinging to a one-game lead in the American League Central, Cleveland (47-42) is gearing up for a big showdown with Chicago. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. ET.
