As the Los Angeles Rams are trading for Cleveland Browns star Myles Garrett , there is no doubt that the football world is feeling the shockwaves from the blockbuster deal. While the talk of the Rams has surrounded Matthew Stafford and rookie Ty Simpson , this insider would say that the drafting of the quarterback in some ways led to the trade.
According to Ari Meirov, the trade for Garrett broken on Monday "likely doesn't happen" if Los Angeles doesn't select the Alabama Crimson Tide signal-caller in Simpson with the No. 13 pick in the last NFL Draft. The reason is that the Rams feel confident with Simpson being the future after Stafford, and they can trade away draft assets to get "elite talent."
"One detail the Rams have privately stressed: The Myles Garrett trade likely doesn't happen if they don't draft Ty Simpson at No. 13," Ari Meirov wrote on X, formerly Twitter. "With a QB they believe can be the future already in place, the Rams are once again comfortable using future draft capital to acquire elite talent. They don't need to worry about those picks for a QB."
What the Rams sent to the Browns for Myles Garrett
There's no denying the shock the football world had when hearing that the Rams were trading for Garrett, who has been one of the best pass rushers and defensive ends in the league since stepping into the league as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2017 draft. The excitement will be palpable as Garrett is coming off his best season with Cleveland, recording a whopping 25 sacks, which is the record for most in a season.
Los Angeles sent Jared Verse , a 2027 first-round pick, and other assets, per Adam Schefter.
"In exchange for Garrett, the Rams are expected to send Pro-Bowl edge Jared Verse, a 2027 first-round pick, and other draft-pick compensation still being negotiated to the Browns," Schefter wrote.
The Rams are looking to vastly improve now with the Garrett trade, as the team last season went 12-5, which put them second in the NFC West, before losing in the conference title game to the Seattle Seahawks .
