HOUSTON — Caleb Durbin is 0 for 14 to begin his Red Sox career but he feels better at the plate than the numbers indicate.
“Definitely not lost up there by any means,” Durbin said. “It’s just have to make the adjustment and figure it out.”
Durbin went 0 for 2, including grounding into a double play, in the Red Sox’ 8-1 loss to the Astros on Monday .

Boston acquired the 26-year-old third baseman in a six-player trade with the Brewers on Feb. 9.
“Right now, I think it’s just trying to get the ball in the air a little bit more,” Durbin said. “It’s just trying to fine-tune, make those adjustments to give yourself the most chances. That’s for me, what it kind of comes down to right now — is just trying to give myself those chances to find some green.”
Manager Alex Cora used Masataka Yoshida as a pinch hitter for Durbin in the seventh inning with two outs and two runners in scoring position.
Cora said his decision to pinch hit for Durbin had to do more with making sure he got Yoshida an at-bat and not Durbin’s performance at the plate so far. Cora said he feels Durbin’s at-bats were better Monday — and Durbin himself agreed.
“Command of the zone much better,” Durbin said. “Just a few tweaks with the swing, but seeing the ball good.”
In his first at-bat Monday, Durbin grounded out to shortstop to end the second inning. In his second at-bat, he grounded into a 6-4-3 double play to end the fifth inning.
“It’s more of wanting to come off on a hot start team-wise because that’s what it’s about at the end of the day and you want to put yourself in the best position to help the team. But again, it’s super early. I don’t even think it’s April yet. I’ve lost track of days, but super early. And for me, it’s just work harder. Like keep working, keep working. .. So we’ll get this thing figured out.”
Durbin finished third for the 2025 NL Rookie of the Year as the Brewers’ starting third baseman. He batted .256 with a .334 on-base percentage, .387 slugging percentage, and .721 OPS in 136 games. He hit 11 home runs, 25 doubles, and drove in 53 RBIs while scoring 60 runs and stealing 18 bases. He ranked in the 98th percentile in strikeout percentage (9.9%).
“Baseball is just one of those sports I think where it’s a very feel sport,” Durbin said. “So the more you’re in rhythm and the more you have your feels right, you’re going to be hot and you’re going to be feeling good. So it’s just trying to get back to that and work through that. Like I said, it’s just working. You’ve got to put in the work to get those feels back.”
