Cody Ponce ’s first MLB start since 2021 ended Monday night with a cart taking the 31-year-old Toronto Blue Jays pitcher off the field .
Colorado Rockie Jake McCarthy ’s at-bat started out awkwardly for Ponce. On his second pitch of the at-bat, Ponce tumbled out of his delivery when his cleat appeared to slip on the mound. He did not seem to suffer an injury, but the balk put a runner on third.
McCarthy then hit a grounder to the right side of the infield. Ponce pivoted off the mound, but misjudged the hop. When he tried to recover, he landed awkwardly on his right knee before hopping behind the first-base bag and falling to the ground in pain.
A cart ultimately came out to remove Ponce from the field. Toronto initially announced the injury as right-knee discomfort.
Sportsnet’s Ben Nicholson-Smith reported after the game that Ponce was getting an MRI on the knee. Ponce told manager John Schneider that he thought he hyper-extended his knee.
“You feel for him,” Schneider said, per Nicholson-Smith . “We’ll see.”
Ponce signed a three-year, $30 million deal with Toronto in early December after spending the past three seasons in Asia. Last season, Ponce had a Triple Crown and was named MVP as he helped the Hanwha Eagles to the Korean Series. Ponce led the league with a 1.89 ERA, 17 wins and 252 strikeouts.
Francys Romero reported later Monday night that Toronto recalled right-hander Lázaro Estrada from its AAA team in a move that could correspond with a potential Ponce injury stint.
Toronto ultimately lost to Colorado, 14-5, in the game — the Blue Jays’ first loss of the season.
