It has not been a good season for Brayan Bello , as he has struggled in most of his starts. With Bello scheduled to start against the Baltimore Orioles today, manager Chad Tracy explained why he was not using an opener, according to Red Sox beat reporter Christopher Smith.
"Chad Tracy on why the Red Sox are starting Brayan Bello and not using an opener: 'It just feels like for us to be successful, we need Bello to start. I mean, we've beat a dead horse with this," Smith wrote on X.
Bello is 2-5 with a 5.63 ERA in 11 total appearances. Recently, he tossed seven shutout innings against the Cleveland Guardians . It was noteworthy that he had an opener before him. But Tracy credited Bello with a good appearance against the Guardians, which justified his decision to turn to him for a start against the Sox today.
"We had him in an outing against the Guardians where he faced eight lefties. He's worked very hard in between starts over the next couple of weeks to work on arm slot and different things to solve for lefties. We gotta put him out there," Tracy added.
Bello has struggled against the Baltimore Orioles, who he is starting against today. So far, he is 2-1 with a 4.97 ERA in five games against the O's. Recently, he lasted just 3 1/3 innings, allowing eight earned runs in a disastrous start against the Orioles on April 24. Tracy pulled Bello early, which eventually proved to be a big loss for their divisional opponent. Bello will have a chance to gain his manager's confidence with a good outing.
