BOSTON — Marcelo Mayer has been an early star of the Red Sox season, smoking a clutch pinch-hit double on Opening Day and hitting a memorable homer in Friday’s home opener. He has also had quite the showing between innings on NESN.
Mayer, Boston’s second-year second baseman, made his acting debut in a CarShield commercial that has aired quite frequently in the early goings of the Red Sox season. The spot shows a mustachioed fan heckling Mayer in the stands, only for Mayer to teleport into the stands and unload on him in retaliation, punctuating his soliloquy by mimicking the fan’s jeer of “You bum!” The official Major League Baseball account even referenced the commercial Friday after Mayer hit a two-run homer to extend Boston’s lead over the Padres to 5-2 in the sixth inning.
The ad has caught the attention of Mayer’s teammates and close friends.
“It was great,” said outfielder Roman Anthony . “It was top-notch acting. He’s a natural.”
Mayer said the process for landing the commercial was a simple one during spring training. He spent one afternoon filming it at the baseball field at Florida Gulf Coast University where a crew had his lines prepared.
“My agent said, ‘Do you want to do a commercial for X amount of money after a spring training game?’ I said sure,” Mayer said. “I had my spring training day, then went to FGCU right after and I read a prompt screen.
“It took longer than what it should have been. But that’s just how it is, I guess.”
The spot debuted on Opening Day along with a few other CarShield ads, both national and local, that have had a frequent presence on the NESN airwaves early. But Mayer’s has taken off, in large part because of his recitation of his lines off the prompter .
“Let’s go,” Anthony said. “I would imagine (it has), because of the good acting... We gave him (expletive) about it when it first came out a little bit, but nothing too crazy.”
Playing for the Red Sox has robbed Mayer of the chance to see his ad played during games on NESN, but that doesn’t mean he’s unaware of the impact it has made.
“I’ve seen a good amount,” Mayer said. “My friends have sent it to me, so that’s about all I’ve seen. I’m sure people are loving it on Twitter.
“They just think it’s funny, especially my friends back home. Seeing me on TV doing a commercial is pretty hilarious. It’s just like a little joke we’ve got going on.”
Mayer, who famously looks like Entourage actor Adrian Grenier, isn’t sure if his CarShield ad is the beginning of a career in acting.
“I’m worried about baseball right now,” he said. “That’s it.”
