BOSTON — Instant reactions from the Red Sox ’ 4-2 loss to the New York Yankees on Thursday:
1.The Red Sox dropped to 9-16 while the Yankees improved to 16-9. New York swept the three-game series, outscoring Boston 12-3. Boston managed just 13 hits in 27 innings. The Sox had four hits Tuesday, five hits Wednesday and four hits in the finale.
2.Red Sox starter Payton Tolle dominated in his first big league start of the 2026 season after being recalled from Triple-A Worcester before the game. The 23-year-old allowed just one run, three hits and one walk while striking out 11 in six innings. He set career-highs in innings pitched and strikeouts.
Jazz Chisholm Jr. wrapped a home run around Pesky’s Pole for the lone run against the lefty.
3.Tolle let out a scream after he escaped a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the fourth inning. He struck out Giancarlo Stanton swinging on a changeup, got Randal Grichuk to fly out to shallow right field and struck out Trent Grisham looking on a cutter.
4.Tolle recorded 18 swings and misses: eight with his four-seam fastball, seven with his curveball, two with his cutter and one with his changeup. He threw 46 four-seam fastballs, averaging 97.1 mph and topping out at 99.5 mph.
5.Yankees starter Cam Schlittler , a Walpole High and Northeastern alum, earned the win. He allowed one run, four hits and one walk while striking out five in eight innings.
This comes after Schlittler dominated the Red Sox at Yankee Stadium in Game 3 of the 2025 AL Wild Card Series, striking out 12 in eight scoreless innings.
6. Danny Coulombe replaced Tolle, who left with a 2-1 lead after six innings. Coulombe and Greg Weissert combined to give up three runs on five hits and one walk as the Yankees jumped ahead 4-2. Coulombe left the game with the bases loaded and two outs after a big strikeout of Austin Wells . Weissert replaced him and allowed a two-run single to pinch hitter Cody Bellinger and RBI single to Aaron Judge .
‘We knew Bellinger was going to be part (of it) at one point. It was just a matter of when."
Cora added about Weissert vs. Bellinger, “We felt like it was a good matchup for us. We fell behind and Bellinger put the ball in play.”
7.After the Yankees took the lead in the sixth, Schlittler retired the Red Sox offense on four pitches in the seventh inning. Wilyer Abreu led off with a single on an 0-1 count, but Trevor Story grounded into a 6-3 double play on the next pitch and Marcelo Mayer lined out softly to second base on the first pitch he saw.
8.Marcelo Mayer put the Red Sox ahead 1-0 in the second inning with an RBI double that scored Trevor Story. Boston took advantage of Amed Rosario ’s throwing error, which put Story on base with two outs.
9. Carlos Narváez hit his first home run of the season. His two-out 383-foot blast into the Monster Seats gave Boston a 2-1 lead in the fifth inning.
10.The Red Sox will open a three-game series in Baltimore on Friday at 7:05 p.m. Left-hander Garrett Crochet (2-3, 7.88 ERA) will start for Boston. The Orioles have not announced their starter.
