HOUSTON — Red Sox veteran starter Patrick Sandoval will begin a rehab assignment Sunday.
He’s expected to pitch four innings for the Portland Sea Dogs in their 1:05 p.m. road game against the Somerset Patriots in New Jersey.
Boston placed Sandoval on the 15-day injured list last Wednesday, the day before the regular season began.
Sandoval is returning from left ulnar collateral ligament surgery (internal brace) that he underwent during the first half of the 2024 season. He missed the entire 2025 season after Boston signed him to a two-year, $18.25 million contract in December 2024 with the hope that he could contribute in 2026 .
The 29-year-old lefty has a career 4.01 ERA in 107 appearances (100 starts), all with the Angels from 2019-24.
He and starting pitcher Kutter Crawford both threw simulated games in Fort Myers on Monday.
Crawford also began the season on the IL. He is working his way back from right wrist surgery last July . He also dealt with patellar tendinitis last season.
Both Crawford and Sandoval will fly to Boston from Fort Myers on Thursday. Crawford will have a deload week.
“It’s good for him,” Cora said. “He’s been going full throttle since he started throwing. So it’s a good week for him.”
Cora said Crawford might begin a rehab assignment later this month.
Boston has the ability to option Crawford to Triple-A Worcester if there’s no immediate spot for him after he completes a rehab assignment.
The Sox will need to figure out a spot for Sandoval once he’s ready to be activated. It’s possible he could be used as a long reliever.
