The Red Sox needed to bolster their infield this offseason, especially after losing Alex Bregman to the Chicago Cubs . They were often connected to Isaac Paredes , and it appears they tried make a trade for the infielder.
According to The Athletic , the Astros had "serious discussions" about a three-team trade that would have sent Paredes to the Red Sox while Houston acquired Brendan Donovan from the St. Louis Cardinals .
Donovan ended up getting traded to the Seattle Mariners in a three-team trade with the Tampa Bay Rays .
The Red Sox, per The Athletic , are one of at least five teams engaged with the Astros for Paredes.
The Red Sox signed Isiah Kiner-Falefa , but they don't have a solidified third baseman . Marcelo Mayer could play third, but then a hole opens up at second. Kiner-Falefa can play third or second, but he wouldn't bring the pop of offense Boston needs.
While Paredes, who can play three infield position, isn't a power-hitter, he has the ability to hit 20 home runs.
The Red Sox go into spring training with a surplus of pitcher they could use in a trade to help fill out their infield. But time is running out if they want to strike a deal and get a newcomer acclimated before spring training games begin next month.
