The Red Sox have yet to sign a free agent to a major league contract this offseason. Might that change with Alex Bregman ?
ESPN’s Buster Olney reported that Boston has “signaled a willingness to pay him big money.” The MLB insider floated a six-year, $171.5 million deal — similar to the one the Detroit Tigers offered Bregman last season before he ultimately signed with the Red Sox .
Sources told MassLive’s Chris Cotillo over the weekend that the Red Sox remain engaged with Bregman and his agents, but they’re also assessing others like Bo Bichette .
Bregman opted out of the final two years of his contract to explore the free agent market. There were other teams connected to the 31-year-old , but some like the Toronto Blue Jays went in a different direction when they signed Japanese star infielder Kazuma Okamoto .
Bregman finished the 2025 season with a .273 batting average with 18 home runs and 62 RBIs — numbers that likely would have been inflated had he not been sidelined with a quad injury. The leadership he brought to Boston’s clubhouse did not go unnoticed and was valuable to young players like Marcelo Mayer and Roman Anthony .
At 31, Bregman expressed the desire for his next contract to bring him to the end — or at least close to — the end of his career. Whether the Red Sox want to commit term and money to the third baseman will depend on their willingness to spend potentially past the second CBT (competitive balance tax) of $264 million.
