BALTIMORE — For the third game in a row, the Red Sox will be without Roman Anthony on Friday night in Baltimore.
Anthony’s sore back has not improved enough for Boston to play him, and as a result, Jarren Duran is once again in left field with Masataka Yoshida serving as the designated hitter for Boston.
“He’s feeling better, moving better,” manager Alex Cora said about Anthony. “Hopefully, at one point during the weekend, he plays. We’re not going to rush it but it was a better day for him.”
Anthony tweaked his upper back on a swing during Tuesday’s loss to the Yankees and was held out of the lineup Wednesday and Thursday. He’s not a candidate to go on the injured list and could play as soon as Saturday. Complicating matters somewhat is the fact Saturday’s game was moved up from 4:05 p.m. ET to 12:05 p.m. due to rain. Because of the quick turnaround, the Red Sox might hold Anthony out until Sunday.
“We’ve just got to make sure he’s good,” Cora said.
The Red Sox, who scored just three runs in a three-game sweep at the hands of the Yankees , will look to get back on track on the road, where they are 4-8 so far this season. Righty Brayan Bello will look to rebound from a shortened start against the Tigers ; he’ll pitch opposite righty Brandon Young , who was just called up from Triple-A and will make his second big league start of 2026.
The Red Sox have lost three in a row and five of six games to fall to seven games below .500 at 9-16. The series at Camden Yards is the first of the year against the Orioles , who are a game under .500 at 12-13.
First pitch is at 7:05 p.m. ET.
