The Bruins clinched a playoff berth on Saturday, but their loss to the Lightning caused them to drop in the standings with just two games to go.
Boston secured its postseason trip despite the late loss because the Red Wings and Islanders each also lost later in the afternoon. But the defeat opened the door for the Senators to leapfrog them.
With 96 points, the Bruins are tied with the Senators. The first applicable tie-breaker is regulation wins. Ottawa has 37 and the Boston has 31, so Boston has to finish with more points to get a higher seed.

Who could Bruins face in the playoffs
The Bruins will be either the first or second wild card. That means facing a division winner. That’s one of four potential teams.
1. Carolina— The Hurricanes have clinched the Metro and the No. 1 seed in the East with 110 points. They’ll face the No. 2 Wild Card.
2. Buffalo—The Atlantic is going to come down to the wire. The Sabres have a two point lead over both Montreal and Tampa with two games to go. Buffalo’s 41 regulation wins vs. 40 for Tampa and 33 for Montreal could be the determining tie-breaker.
2. Tampa— Beating the Bruins on Saturday made a rematch slightly more likely.
3. Montreal— The Canadiens have cooled off a bit at the wrong time.
