PITTSBURGH — Aaron Rodgers is back in his black and gold No. 8 jersey, laying the groundwork for his 22nd NFL season. The four-time Associated Press NFL MVP and future Pro Football Hall of Famer can't move around like he used to, but with a young and budding offensive line in front of him, he hopes not to have to.
Offensive tackle Troy Fautanu and guard Mason McCormick manned the right side of the front last season, but both flipped sides during Monday's OTA practice during the portion of the session that media was permitted to watch.
"Obviously, me and Mason have chemistry," Fautanu said afterward. "Playing last year together, he's helped me out a ton in terms of being able to play fast and being communicative. Things are loud and Zach (Frazier) is kind of dealing with all he's got to deal with, Mason's right there to help me out. But any guard that's playing next to me: him, Brock (Hoffman), Spencer (Anderson), you can go down the list.
"It's a new offense, so we're all kind of adjusting, but at the same time, Mason has helped me a lot, and obviously, I'd love to play with him again."
Fautanu, Frazier and McCormick all arrived in Pittsburgh as part of the Steelers' 2024 draft class. Broderick Jones , who got to town a year earlier, is recovering from a neck injury that clouds his role this upcoming season, prompting Fautanu's adjustment.
The Steelers also lost veteran guard Isaac Seumalo in free agency this offseason, leaving a hole open to the left of Frazier. Fautanu would like to remain beside McCormick, no matter what side they land on.
"We haven't really talked to much about that, but obviously, I would love for that to happen," Fautanu said. "I tell Mason all the time, I don't want to play next to anybody else."
