So far, it's been a season of streaks for the Detroit Tigers . Two wins, followed by four losses. Two more wins ensued, then five straight losses. Now, the Tigers are winners of five in a row and are looking to sweep their second straight opponent, the Kansas City Royals . During this current streak, rookie infielder Kevin McGonigle has continued to prove why he's so highly touted. Fresh off signing a $150 million contract extension, McGonigle manned third base for the Tigers. Early in Thursday's contest, X (formerly Twitter) account Talkin' Baseball shared an absolutely outstanding defensive play by McGonigle.
"Kevin McGonigle with a LASER to first," posted the baseball-focused account on Thursday afternoon.
Starting the afternoon with a rocket to nail the Royals' Maikel Garcia , McGonigle's hot start has continued. Baseball's number two prospect entering the season, McGonigle has split time at both shortstop and third base for the Tigers so far. The 21-year-old has hit .313 with a home run, eight RBIs, and a stolen base across 64 at-bats.
While it's still early in his rookie campaign, McGonigle showcases why he's already earned such a large contract daily. The infielder continued to improve throughout last season in the minors. That growth is apparent at the major league level and has continued. Built around back-to-back AL Cy Young award winner Tarik Skubal , the Tigers are looking to capitalize on what could be Skubal's final season calling Comerica Park home.
Locking McGonigle in now gives Tigers president of baseball operations Scott Harris more time to figure out a potential Skubal extension. It could also open the door to an earlier trade of their ace, especially if Detroit's inconsistency continues. In any case, McGonigle is ready to contribute to a playoff contender now. Will the Tigers get back on track to clinch their third straight postseason berth? If so, then another chance at Detroit's first World Series title since 1984 will be within McGonigle and company's reach.
