The Boston Red Sox have been sputtering this season due to the combination of a brutal hitting slump and a series of injuries. The Red Sox are in last place in the American League East as they prepare to play the explosive Atlanta Braves . Boston has played better on the road (10-12) than the team has at Fenway Park (8-14), but the hitting has been ineffective throughout the season.
Veteran shortstop Trevor Story is one of the players that the team is counting on to mount an offensive thrust, but the Red Sox have placed him on the 10-day Injured List with a sports hernia . According to Story, he has had the issue since spring training, but he has tried to grind through it until now.
"Now, it's just a matter of how severe and what the solution is," Story said . "Hopefully, it's a case where I don't have to get surgery."
Story has had a disastrous season at the plate. After leading the Red Sox with 25 home runs and 96 runs batted in last year, he is hitting .206 with 3 home runs and 19 RBI this season. He has struck out a team-worst 57 times and has walked just eight times.
The Red Sox started former Brewer Andruw Monasterio at shortstop both Friday and Saturday. He is hitting .258 with 1 home run and 9 RBI.
Boston has been getting decent pitching from their starters and bullpen, but the lack of offense has hurt the team badly this season. The Red Sox fired manager Alex Cora after a slow start and interim manager Chad Tracy has not been able to rally the team.
