On Sunday at Camden Yards, Red Sox shortstop Trevor Story said he planned to have a 1-on-1 conversation with chief baseball officer Craig Breslow after the lead decision-maker provided an unsatisfactory explanation for firing manager Alex Cora and a handful of his coaches Saturday. That conversation has taken place.
Speaking to NESN’s Jahmai Webster on Monday night in Toronto , Story said he had the chance to clear the air with Breslow.
“We talked about it. We hashed it out,” Story told Webster. “Obviously, you heard how I felt yesterday about the whole situation. It’s part of the process. It’s having the conversations, having these tough conversations. Whether you agree or disagree, at the end of the day, we agreed that we want the Red Sox to win.
“Baseball’s a crazy game and it’s a game that is a business at the end of the day. We talked. Obviously, those conversations will stay between us.”
An emotional Story — along with teammate Garrett Whitlock — was clearly displeased with Breslow and members of ownership after a brief team meeting Sunday at Camden Yards in which players were not able to ask questions. Speaking to reporters before Sunday’s game, Story openly questioned the direction of the Red Sox and said Cora and the fired coaches did not get a “fair shot.” In no uncertain terms, the usually mild-mannered Story made it clear he was going to talk to Breslow before the end of the day.
“They spoke,” Story said of the team meeting. “There just have to be more conversations had. I wouldn’t say it was satisfactory.
“We’ll have our talk. We haven’t had it yet.”
By Monday, after the Red Sox traveled to Toronto, tensions had cooled.
“Trevor and I had a conversation,” Breslow told MassLive on Monday . “Trevor obviously is a very important part of this team. He’s also a leader on this team, and he’s incredibly well respected in the clubhouse and by the staff and by me. I’m grateful for the chance to have the conversation with him.”
Now, Story and the rest of the Red Sox will forge onward with interim manager Chad Tracy and a new group of coaches leading the charge.
“They’re coming into a tough spot,” Story told NESN. “As much as we were sad to see the other guys go, it doesn’t discredit any ball knowledge these guys have or any message they have. It’s good to talk baseball.
“We’ll figure it out. It might be a little uncomfortable at first but that’s part of the situation we’re in.”
