Red Sox owner John Henry made the trip to Baltimore to deliver the news to Alex Cora and several members of his coaching staff that the team was moving on from them.
Henry issued a statement via the Red Sox that was posted to social media, but, as he has done for the last six years, did not speak publicly to the media about the decision.
Chief baseball officer Craig Breslow and CEO Sam Kennedy were the ones to answer questions from the media.
During his appearance on WEEI’s “ The Greg Hill Show, ” Kennedy defended Henry not speaking publicly after firing Cora.
“John Henry is deeply engaged with this organization,” Kennedy said . “He has been since Day 1, going all the way back to 2002. For those of you who know John, he doesn’t always do it in the most public-facing way. He’s very selective in terms of how he engages with the media. But that should not ever be confused with a lack of involvement or care.”
Kennedy added that Henry “cares deeply” about the Red Sox and the two are in “regular communication daily.”
“He’s been in touch with players over the course of the last 48, 72 hours,” Kennedy said . “And so I think it’s important to clarify that. People understand and see him around the ballpark.”
Because Cora was fired hours after Saturday’s win against the Baltimore Orioles , the front office was unable to get the team together until the following day. Trevor Story didn’t find out the news of Cora’s firing until the former manager called him.
Many other players found out on social media.
The last time Henry spoke publicly was Feb. 17, 2020 after the Red Sox traded Mookie Betts . He didn’t speak after Chaim Bloom was fired, nor after the team traded Rafael Devers last June.
“I’ve been stating for years the level of involvement that John has. Nothing’s wavered there whatsoever, and the passion and care is there,” Kennedy said . “But I think there’s this misperception because he engages with the media on a select basis, not engaging with talk radio, not engaging in a back and forth press conference over the last several years, I understand raises some question. But I am here to tell you that he is deeply, deeply engaged in this franchise and everything across all of Fenway Sports Group.”
