Jeremy Jacquet seemed destined for Chelsea before a late change of heart saw him choose Liverpool instead.
The Rennes defender had looked set to join Stamford Bridge, but as deadline day approached, he decided a summer move to Anfield offered a clearer path both immediately and in the long run.

Jeremy Jacquet had emerged as Chelsea's top centre-back target in January, with personal terms already agreed.
But Rennes were unwilling to let him leave mid-season, preferring a summer deal, and that delay gave Liverpool time to make their case, according to Fabrice Hawkins .
Chelsea's defence is already crowded, with several senior players fit and more set to return from injury or loan spells.
That made the route to regular football look less certain, especially in a system that relies on just two starting centre-backs.
Liverpool's approach focused on their need for reinforcements and a more straightforward path into the side.
The club have agreed to pay up to 72 million euros for Jacquet, who is seen as an answer to their defensive concerns.
Ibrahima Konate 's contract is winding down, and ongoing injury problems have left Liverpool short at the back.
On top of that, Jacquet reportedly grew concerned about his role in what is already a crowded Chelsea roster.
That demand for new blood gave Jacquet a genuine chance to break into the team rather than waiting for opportunities to emerge at Chelsea.
