The race for the 2026 FIFA World Cup Golden Boot is on. Three of the greatest in all of soccer are currently fighting for the Golden Boot. Erling Haaland just scored a brace in his last game. With the two goals from Haaland for Norway to eliminate Belgium , he tied Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi with seven goals so far in the World Cup.
While all three players have scored seven goals, only one player will come home with the Golden Boot, and currently, Mbappe l eads the way according to FIFA.
"The adidas Golden Boot will be awarded to the player who scores the most goals in the final competition. If two or more players score the same number of goals, the number of assists (as determined by the members of the FIFA Technical Study Group) shall be decisive, " the official rules from FIFA read.
Currently, all three players have seven goals, but Mbappe also has two assists, while the other two players do not have assists. If they all tie in both goals and assists, FIFA has another tiebreaker.
"If two or more players are still equal after taking into account the number of assists, the total minutes played in the tournament will be taken into account, with the player playing fewer minutes ranked first," the rules read.
This would be highly unlikely, though. Not only does Mbappe have the lead, but his team is one of the teams favored to win the World Cup. Meaning, he will have the most opportunities to score.
Still, there is a possibility the drama around who will win the Golden Boot will continue to stretch on. France will play their quarterfinal game against Morocco on July 9. Meanwhile, Norway will play in the quarterfinal on July 11 against the winner of Mexico and England . Argentina , the home of Messi, has yet to play in its Round of 16 game. Messi will have a chance to take the lead against Egypt on July 7. If he fails to score but Argentina wins, he will have another chance against the winner of Switzerland and Colombia on July 11
