The New York Yankees placed Anthony Volpe on the IL before the start of the season, as he is still recovering from surgery to repair his partially torn labrum in his left shoulder. On Friday, Volpe received an important update about his road to recovery.
Reports indicate that the Yankees plan to begin the 24-year-old shortstop's rehab assignment on Tuesday, April 14, with Double-A Somerset, according to Erik Boland of Newsday Sports. However, it is important to note that the scheduled date of Volpe's first rehab assignment can change between now and Tuesday.
"The plan with Anthony Volpe as of now, which is always subject to change, is for him to start a rehab assignment Tuesday with Double-A Somerset," reported Boland.
Volpe was forced to undergo surgery after re-aggravating a shoulder issue in September 2025, after he initially suffered the injury in May 2025. The surgery took place in October that year while the Yankees were participating in the playoffs.
Once Anthony Volpe eventually returns , he will begin playing his fourth season in MLB. He will aim for a better performance in 2026 after struggling much throughout the 2025 campaign. Volpe struggled defensively, especially late last season, while recording a .212 batting average and .272 OBP with 114 hits, 19 home runs, and 72 RBIs. He also totaled 18 stolen bases, which was a career low.
While Volpe remains on the IL, the Yankees will continue relying on Jose Caballero at shortstop. Ryan McMahon and Amed Rosario are listed as the backup options at shortstop for the time being. One of those three will get the start at shortstop on Friday when the Yankees take on the Tampa Bay Rays at 7:10 p.m. EST.
