There are plenty of New York Yankees fans who do not wish to see Anthony Volpe take another at-bat in Pinstripes. He had everything fans wanted from a potential franchise pillar. The New Jersey native was a humble first-round draft pick who played shortstop, was born in Manhattan and grew up as a diehard Yankees fan. When he won a Gold Glove in his rookie season, excitement only grew. Unfortunately, he has failed to hit at an MLB level .
Volpe is batting .222 with a .283 on-base percentage, .379 slugging percentage and .662 OPS through 472 games. Nevertheless, the organization is not ready to give up on the young right-handed batter. He is recovering from offseason shoulder surgery and is due to begin a rehab assignment in Double-A Somerset. Yankees general manager Brian Cashman communicated the team's stance on Volpe.
"That's always been the plan," he said when asked if the No. 30 overall selection in the 2019 MLB Draft will be the starting shortstop once he returns to the big-league roster, per Erik Boland of Newsday Sports.
Although there are people who have grown tired of the feeble offense and excessive errors, context is important. Jose Caballero , whom New York acquired at the 2025 trade deadline, was slashing .135/.200/.162/.362 entering Friday's series opener versus the Tampa Bay Rays (his former club). He offers valuable versatility as a utility infielder and is a speed demon (124 stolen bases in 380 games), but Volpe arguably still offers more upside.
Perhaps the soon-to-be 25-year-old can earn back the city's trust when fully healthy. New York misguidedly allowed Anthony Volpe to play through a torn labrum for much of last season, which could have hugely negative effects on his continued development. He must quickly regain his confidence at SS, block out the noise and post productive at-bats.
Otherwise, his tenure with the Yankees will meet a disappointing end. Volpe will try to reward the franchise's patience, as he heads back to his home state for the next step of his recovery.
