The New York Yankees avoided a no-hit bid Thursday afternoon but fell 1–0 to the Athletics at Yankee Stadium in a game dominated by pitching.

Athletics left-hander Jeffrey Springs controlled the contest from the outset, holding the Yankees hitless through six innings. He mixed his pitches effectively, limited hard contact, and kept the lineup off balance, building tension with each passing frame.
The Yankees' lone breakthrough came in the seventh inning. With one out, catcher Ben Rice lined a single to right field on a slider, ending Springs' no-hit bid and preventing a historic performance. However, the momentum was short-lived, as New York failed to generate further offense .
The moment quickly became the defining highlight of the game, as Rice's hit ensured the continuation of Major League Baseball's ongoing no-hitter drought. The league has not seen a no-hitter since 2024, making each late-inning bid increasingly notable.
The Talkin' Baseball podcast shared the moment on X, formerly Twitter, showcasing the base hit that prevented MLB history from happening.

Despite avoiding history, the Yankees' offensive struggles in Thursday's game were evident. Outside of Rice's single and a lone walk, New York generated little pressure against Oakland's pitching staff, recording just one hit in a relatively rare off day for a lineup that had been strong to open the 2026 season.
The loss underscores a broader concern for New York as the season progresses. While the pitching staff has kept games competitive, the lineup must find greater rhythm to support those efforts.

Ultimately, Rice's hit kept the Yankees from ending up on the wrong side of a historic outcome, but it did not change the result. New York now turns its focus to improving offensive production as it prepares to open a three-game series against the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday.
