College football's traditional February national signing day came and went Wednesday with the Texas Tech football team adding no new players. It's not as if Tech coach Joey McGuire had a bunch of holes to fill anyway.
The Red Raiders currently project to have 123 players for 2025, 18 more than next year's expected 105-player roster limit. That's counting high school players who signed in December but won't arrive until after the spring semester. It's also assuming a federal judge gives final approval in April to the House v. NCAA settlement proposal.
Tech went far above next year's roster cap with a busy winter. The Red Raiders added 18 high school recruits on the December early signing day, landed 17 experienced players from the NCAA transfer portal, added Frenship quarterback Holden Phillips as a preferred walk-on and took former Lubbock Christian University basketball player Jalen Brattain as a tight end.
McGuire bluntly acknowledged the likelihood of having to cut players before July 1, when the new rules would take effect.

Offensive guard Davion Carter and defensive back Devynn Cromwell are still on the roster for 2025, benefiting from the blanket waiver the NCAA issued in December to players who started their careers at non-NCAA programs. In addition, linebacker Bryce Ramirez received a seventh year of eligibility, making up for 2022 when he suffered a season-ending leg injury in the third game.
Seven of Tech's high school signees are ranked among the top 100 in Texas on the 247Sports composite index. In usual Tech fashion, they're mostly offensive skill players: quarterback Lloyd Jones, tight end Preztynn Harrison and receivers Michael Dever, Tristian Gentry, Bryson Jones and Leyton Stone. Also in the top 100 is Prosper offensive lineman Connor Carty, who the Red Raiders pulled away from a longtime commitment to Texas A&M.
Tech's class ranks No. 48 on the 247Sports composite, down from No. 25 last year and No. 28 the year before.
