Hubert Davis and North Carolina have their backs against the wall. Just to be in the conversation for the NCAA Tournament, they need to rise in the NET rankings. To do that, they have to win the games that they should win. Last week against Pitt was a huge game, but because of their recent losing streak, the Panthers dropped to a Quad 2 win.
But every win counts. On Saturday, the Tar Heels (15-11) took down Syracuse, 88-82, snapping a road losing streak. Yet another Quad 2 win makes them 5-0 in Quad 2 games. However, the biggest thing working against North Carolina is its 1-10 record against Quad 1 teams.
As a result of the win, the Tar Heels have risen from No. 50 in the NET rankings to No. 47.
They are also 5-1 in Quad 3 game: The only loss was to Stanford at home. They are 4-0 in Quad 4 games.
North Carolina is the second highest-ranked team with double-digit Quad 1 losses behind Georgia, which is 2-10 in such games. They are rated seventh-best among teams with double-digit losses on the season. Ohio State , which is 15-10 and 27th in the NET, is the highest-rated team with 10 or more losses.
North Carolina will have another chance to rise in the rankings with a game at home against NC State on Wednesday, Feb. 19, at 7 p.m. The game can be watched on ESPN.
