Is Brett Veach Actually a BAD GM? We Reviewed Every Chiefs Draft
Is Brett Veach actually a great drafting GM or has the Chiefs' incredible success hidden more misses than fans want to admit? Price Carter and Christian Ainsworth go year-by-year through every Chiefs draft class of the Brett Veach era, revisiting the biggest hits, misses and steals from 2018 through 2026. Plus, the guys evaluate the early returns from Kansas City's newest classes and ask whether the young talent currently emerging could completely change the way we view Veach's recent drafts.

Welcome to another edition of The Intangibles brought to you by Arrowhead Addict.
My name is Bryce Carter, joined today by Christian Ainsworth.
We've got, um, well, it's the dead time.
I, I don't know how to describe it.
Christian and I were talking, uh, pre-show that this feels like the longest week of our lives, and part of it is just because, like, I don't know, I was told football is close, people have been telling me that.
And now it feels like it couldn't be further away.
I know it's still like 1211 days, depending on how you look at it, like, this time next week, it'll be game day for the opening season of the NFL with the Patriots taking on the Seahawks, um, that'll probably make it feel better.
This weekend, we'll make it feel better with, uh, college football, we got some, we got some good games.
I'm excited to watch.
LSU Clemson, uh, Oregon, Boise State could be spicy too.
Oregon's dripping with first round talent.
Um, LSU's got some people too, like the big tight end Tradez Green.
Be interested to see who ends up being tight end one in this class.
Jamari Johnson on Oregon or Tradez Green.
Maybe there's a somebody who creeps into the picture too.
But we're gonna tackle kind of a tough topic today.
Lots of dialogue, lots of discussion, lots of Consternation about Chiefs General Manager Brett Veach.
So today, We're gonna, um, we're gonna put him on trial here, for lack of a better term.
Um, we're gonna kind of go over the full resume, look at stuff, and try to be as objective as possible about like what his job is.
When Christian and I were talking about this, we're like, hey, It's not really that interesting to just come to the conclusion of like, yeah, he's not the worst, he's not the best, and they've had really good results.
So we're gonna try to take a little bit bigger picture of you and try to, try to be objective about it, but first, wanted to hit the injury report.
And again, kind of going back to the like, what matters here, what doesn't matter, what's news, what's noise.
The Chiefs are practicing today, in fact, the Chiefs uh are at the podium right now, Lagerius Snead, Xavier Worthy, a couple other guys, um, but in reality, like this week of practice is Basically training camp.
I mean, yeah, it's good, they got some of those new guys like Jack Pieburn and, and some of the other new roster claims that are, you know, practicing for the first time as Chiefs, but for the most part, like, nothing really matters until next Thursday.
If Josh Simmons doesn't run out there next Thursday, we can, we can lift the uh lift the plastic container and press the full on panic button.
Uh, Andy Reid said today.
He's still rehabbing, he was at the Chiefs luncheon yesterday, so like he's in and around, so you can like put those rest to, uh, you can put those worries to rest that he's like not with the team, um, but I, Christian, I'm having a hard time getting really ramped up.
I, I real quick just to run over the injury report, just so you know, Josh Simmons did not practice, uh, Shamari Connor did not practice, Chris Jones did not practice, there's still no Ashton Gillati.
And Tyreek Smith on the practice squad were not there.
Um, Kenneth Walker, Lajarius Snead were full participants, so Kenneth Walker was kind of nursing the ankle.
The Chris Jones is a back injury, but Andy Reid didn't seem overly concerned about it.
I assume that's just veteran rest.
Yeah, I mean, you would think so, right?
Um, yeah, you, I would hope so.
Yeah, oh my God, I hope so.
Um, you kind of spoke to it a little bit, man.
This really feels like the dead week, like a lot of high school sports, you've got like a week where you can't do anything.
Um, it, it definitely feels like that, as far as it, you know, as far as Chiefs of News is concerned, right?
I think everything that's kind of been spoken on or that could be spoken on has been spoken on thus far.
That's why we're kinda taking this, uh, Brett Veach concept, bringing him to task real quick, because I, I feel like that's gonna be one of those topics where we talk about it, there's gonna be some intrigue, and then, again, um, there's a lot to go over, man, and the discourse on Brett Veach right now on Twitter is insane.
I have seen things, like he's the greatest GM.
I've also heard he should be unemployed and working at your local Whataburger, like, it's all over the place, man.
Yeah, yeah, and I mean just going back to the, the season real quick, I mean it it it's just a weird time because like we've talked about all the preseason and all the training camp news, right?
Like talking about Cyrus Allen looking good or Emmett Johnson looking good, it's not really news anymore, and they're not gonna add , I mean, I would be shocked if they add anything significant to the roster at this point.
This is the guys, now we're just in a holding pattern until we see the game, unless there's some sort of news, i.e.
Trace, uh, like, you know, Trey Smith or Josh Simmons, their injuries, how they're looking, if we get more news about any of that, but that will really be next Thursday, whenever they kind of start their game week.
So until then, we're just in a holding pattern, look forward to college football and look forward to the start of the NFL season.
It's kind of nice that we're getting it on a Wednesday, one day sooner, and then we'll get uh the Australia game, which is also.
You know, I, I'll be locked in on that just to see that Rams super team for sure, um, but Here's what we're gonna do today.
We're gonna kind of talk a little bit about what we think Brett Veach has done, hasn't done.
Is he helping?
Is he hindering the team?
I, Christian, you can tell me if I'm wrong, but I feel like the critics of Brett Veach, I think one of the biggest things that they go to is this is a guy who was handed a turnkey job with 4 Hall of Famers, Tyreek Hill, Travis Kelsey, Chris Jones, Patrick Mahomes, and a Hall of Fame coach.
And, you know, that's basically what's carried him too.
I think the common man would be like, well, they've won 3 Super Bowls and went to 5, he's clearly not a bad GM, but I think, you know, correct me if I'm wrong, if I'm misrepresenting this, but I feel like that is what a lot of people say is that this roster has been carried by, you know, 5 Hall of Famers, and he's just been able to do enough, and now some of the works are really showing after a 6 and 11 season.
Yeah, I mean, I would say that, I think that the major critique of Brett Veach is his inability to replenish the roster, like, when you look at a GM, you know, there's so much that goes into it, right?
You've got contracts, you've got free agent signings, you've got the draft, but they're really, really mostly judged on their draft picks and their draft selections, which on this team, This is a little ambiguous as well, like, who's really pulling the trigger on players, you know, offensively, specifically, when Andy Reid is in the room banging the table for a guy, like, are you gonna tell a Hall of Fame coach, maybe the greatest coach of all time, hey, man, uh, no, we're not going to take Xavier Worthy in the first round, we're gonna take Adeni Mitchell, or, you know, anything like that, so, I would say you're probably representing it, you know, I, I would say that's a fair assessment.
Who, real quick, just, I'm just interested in your perspective.
Who do you view as some of the best general managers in the league?
People who are, are really good at their job.
Howie Roseman from the Eagles, I feel like he's kind of the consensus best GM in the league.
Um, other than that, I, I'm blanking on the name of the Bears GM, but he's done a fantastic job, it seems like over the past couple of years as well.
Poles?
I don't know, man, some of that drafting is pretty spotty for poles.
Look at that defense right now, um, you know, and keeping in mind like I think the, the.
Crowning achievement for him was the trade with the Bryce Young pick where they moved down and, you know, got 1 and 9 in that draft.
I mean, for me, so like, and I, I wanna be clear where I'm coming from this, like, we're gonna kind of end up on different sides of this argument.
I'm a little bit more milk toast, but I think Brett Veach is a good GM, not the best.
Like for me, I probably have Eric DeCosta from the Ravens, Howie Roseman from the Eagles, and Jason Light as like tier one.
I think the Buccaneers, the one Jason Lights with the Buccaneers, I think he's one of the best drafters in the NFL.
Um, they just routinely find great contributors all throughout the draft.
Their drafts make sense, they draft good players, they, you know, that's one of the things with Howie Roseman, is that they seem to just really value, like, Taking the best player available, trading down, stockpiling picks, and like, I get a little tired of the Howie Roseman glaze, like I, I saw someone like the Eagles had 4 players claimed off of waivers.
What a sign of strength for this roster.
The Chiefs had 3, OK, like, you know, like I, he's great, I get it.
Not everything he does touch it turns into gold, right?
Like everyone acts like it just.
I don't know, we'll see.
Like, you can't tell me it's the best GM whenever his head coach is Nick Siriani and is paying Jalen Hurts.
Like the limitations of this roster start with those two guys, and those are like the biggest commitment a GM can make, a head coach and a quarterback.
So he's not that great.
Um, yeah, no, no, I agree.
Would you throw less need, the Rams GM, into that conversation?
I have less need as, I have less need as tier two, and I'd be willing to bump him up to tier one.
Roster construction is just so unconventional, like the way that they've done it.
Everybody wants to be the Rams.
Everybody wants to go get Devonte Adams or Miles Garrett, or Trent McDuffie or all the players that they have.
The thing that makes the Rams so unique is their ability to hit on day 2 and day 3 picks, man, that is the, that is how they can afford to do the things that they do, because they just do things so well at that back end.
Um, and you know, like that roster, I, you know, I've heard that roster compared to the 2007 Patriots.
I don't think it's that, there's some, there's, you know, there's some weaknesses there.
They just have like, they might have like 5 or 6 Hall of Famers on that team right now, like, you know, full end, and, um, obviously like Trent McDuffie, Pukunakua, like some of those guys got more work to do, but Garrett, Donald, uh, Stafford, like they've just, they're just dripping with like tons and tons of talent, and also I think that offensive line gets really overrated.
I think like You know, with McVeigh they protect the offensive line, but Elyric Jackson could get suspended.
Um, it's not like people talk about it like it's a great offensive line.
I think it's fine, but I don't think it's great.
Um, but yeah, that way.
I mean, I, I just think people get to this spot where they're just like, oh, super team, everything's great.
I mean.
Me and you can probably sit here and name Rams offensive linemen, but like, can the common person name a Rams off like Kevin Dodson or obviously Lyric Jackson, we just mentioned, but I mean it's not overwhelming.
Um, so I, I have less need in tier two.
I have Brad Holmes from the Lions, who has really crushed the draft the last couple of years, but then like they've, they've missed some pretty big spots, like, how many years have we sat here and said, they need an edge dredger opposite Aiden Hutchinson, and guess what, they still need an edge rusher opposite Aiden Hutchinson, um.
I have Brett Veach in tier 3, so like Brett Veach, Jason Bean, or Brandon Bean, excuse me, uh, John Lynch, Brian Guikunz, like that's that's right around in the area that I have in goodun is with the Packers, and let's, we'll kind of dive into it here a little bit, but I know that that's not like super fun to say like, oh I think he's great, or I think he's the worst, but I just wanna put that in perspective a little bit before we get into, you know, the cross-examination portion of this trial of one Brett Veach, that like, I, I'm not sitting here capping for him and saying I think, I think he's the best in the league, cause I, I do think he's been handed a lot.
Now, I think there's some certain restraints on him that make his job what it is, and I don't know if we'll ever fully get to see what.
Brett like if Brett Veach was hired tomorrow to, I'm trying to think of a bad team, like to run the Dolphins, right?
Like a team that's just total rebuild.
I, I don't know if we'll ever get to see that just because of.
He has insane job security based upon the past.
Yeah, that's true, and I'll make my position clear here as well, while we have the time before we really get started.
Um, I don't think Brett Veach is a very good GM at all.
Yeah, I think there's been a lot of missteps.
I think he has done some good things, and I, I do like the kind of conservative nature um that he has been blessed with or he's blessed the team with, but there's just so many missteps here and, you know, we're, we're guys who watch around the league.
We, we are watching the waiver wire pickups.
Hell, we were talking about 7th round draft picks at UDFAs that were getting picked up and who we thought would make the roster a few weeks ago.
So it's like, you know, we're, we're pretty tapped in.
I just see these other GMs making moves and our GM either sitting on his hands or making moves that you, you know, kind of throw your hands up and go, hey, man, Yeah, I, I know we need a left tackle, um, or I know we need a right tackle, but I mean, heaven forbid, we draft a wide receiver or 3 in one draft to try to replenish the room.
So just, just some of those questionable decisions are the, the ones that are influencing my decision to rank him incredibly low.
Yeah, uh, Preston brought up a good comment in the chat about John Schneider.
He's weird because like sometimes he like has insane drafts like the last couple of ones that they've had where you get Jackson Smith and Jigba and uh Devin Witherspoon in the same draft, or like the draft that they had was Zel and Eman Wri, but also like he trades two first round picks for uh Jamal Adams, which was like probably one, like rarely do I see a trade where I'm like that is an awful trade the minute it comes across the timeline.
I knew that one was terrible the day it happened, and it turns out it was, um, but OK, so here's what we're gonna do, pick by pick, we're gonna, we're not gonna like super drag down on this.
I think like the important thing here is that we come to consensus pretty quickly.
If we have to hm and haw on it, it's probably like in the neutral bucket.
So we're gonna put every Brett Beach draft pick into 3 buckets, good, neutral, bad.
Right?
We don't need to go to the hyperbole of like mega bust bust, OK, great, like it's, it's fallen in one of three things.
Now, obviously this gets way harder the more recent you get.
We're, we can discuss the picks real quick from this last year, but we, we have no idea, and one of the fallacies that I think exists is like, I've already seen people call Ashton Gillati and Omar Norman bad picks.
The guys player, absurd, yeah, like I, I am of the opinion that you can drudge, like by the time year 3 of a rookie season is complete, you have a pretty good idea of who they are.
So like, like Xavier Worthy, Kingsley Su Matia, that draft class, it's kind of put up or shut up time for him, and I, I do think that Worthy needs to have a good season.
We can talk about how those guys are trending, but let's start at the bottom.
Um, this, this one is pretty easy.
Uh, most GMs first drafts are bad, um.
I will just read them all off, and I think we can all agree.
Breland speaks, Derek Noddy, Dorian O'Daniel, Armani Watts, Traymond Smith, Khalil McKenzie.
I would put every player in that bucket as bad, except for Derek Naughty, who gave Derek Naughty, who he is to us today, is part of Brett Veitch's problems, but Derek Naughty, the draft pick was a good pick.
0, 100% agree, just for the production that he gave you, especially as a 3rd round selection, I mean, there were better picks on the board, if you're going back through.
I, I really don't like to do that when you look at drafts because it's like, man, yeah, of course, um, this player who was picked in the 3rd round, like, Puka Nua, it's like, why didn't you take Pukunakura in the 1st round?
It's like, well, you know, cause the evaluation wasn't there, and maybe he's in a system that kind of favors him a little bit, so, but, you know, Given the situation that Derek Natty brought and, you know, the, the amount of reps that he played for the team and how well he played them, especially early, I feel like you gotta put him in that good category.
Next draft, this one is uh the Frank Clark draft, so they traded a first round pick for uh Frank Clark.
Nicole Hardman, good, bad neutral.
I'm gonna say.
Neutral.
I, I think that he brought some things, especially early, that Pro Bowl returning season.
Like, you would have thought we had the next Dante Hall, from how everybody was hyping him up, um, but other than that, I mean, You know, played some good snaps for us.
I think there are a lot of players in the league that were better than Nicole Hardman throughout his tenure in Kansas City, even after bringing, I, I would contend, I think, I think that's a good pick.
He, he really, in the 2nd round, Nicole Hardman.
Yeah , in the late 2nd round, like he DK Metcalf.
I mean, aren't you just doing the thing where you're like, oh, why didn't they just draft Pukaakua?
I mean, yeah, there were good players who went behind him, but he played out his rookie deal here.
He added value as a wide receiver and as a returner.
Um, I, you know, I think we're like, do you realize that like Nicole Hardman is like 4th or 5th in like receiving touch, it's surprising how high he is in receiving touchdowns for the organization out there, and Patrick Mahomes was throwing in the football, like, Juju Smith-Schuster has been a corpse for the past 3 years, he's still getting.
You know, he still had a 100 yard game semi-recently.
I don't know.
I, I'll put it in neutral.
Um, I'll agree with you on neutral.
I, I, I contend like if you could push a button and make most of your second round picks on Nicole Hardman level player, you'd probably be pretty happy with it.
Um, but he's 18th in receiving touchdowns, 16 receiving touchdowns, sorry, I overplayed it a little bit.
I was still surprised at how hard he, how high he is on that list, but.
Um, 22nd receiving yards for franchise, and the Tyreek Hill thing is part of that, so we'll put that in neutral.
Juan Thornhill, good, bad neutral.
I think another neutral, I hate to play defense like this, but it's like, I mean, he played one season through, he had one good season for the Chiefs and then kind of fell off, you know, yeah, no, he did, he did, to be fair, um, but he was supposed to be the heir apparent and just never put it all together in KC.
He was a starter, he was a valued player.
I think if he stays healthy, cause like if you remember, it took him a while to come back and feel right.
I mean, he, he didn't end up starting most of his time here in Kansas City, but did struggle to find the field some.
Colin Saunders round 3.
Uh, bad.
That I, I lean towards bad as well too, cause it took him so long to become who he was supposed to be.
His final year he was a good player, but I, I lean towards bad as well there too.
Um, OK, uh, Rashad fit in round 6.
I think this is a good pick.
I agree, I agree.
He like provided value for them, he played, um, that's obviously we're on the sliding scale of like, it's day 3.
Darwin Thompson running back round, I mean he did, he did virtually nothing .
I'm not gonna call it a bad pick because it's a day 3 running back.
I'll just, are you cool calling it a neutral?
Uh, I get, yeah, I mean, I get, well, here's the, we can, we can't do that though, Price, we, we have to evaluate it in the same, same breath as the Rashad Fenton pick, cause if we do that, if we're, if we're just going late rounds, like, oh, you get kind of a bump, the worst we're ever gonna have is neutral, right?
Like, Darwin Thompson played almost zero reps for Kansas City.
I, I'd say that's a bad pick.
I, I disagree because Kamal Haddon is a bad 3rd round, uh, day 3 pick, cause he didn't roster, like, you know what I'm saying, like Darwin Thompson was at least on the right, hey, he recovered a fumble in the in the AFC divisional that helped spark that.
Like he was at least to make it, but yeah, I forgot, yes, I, yeah, I, I lean towards neutral there, but I'll, I'll.
We'll, we'll go back and forth.
We give this one neutral next time we're tied.
I was gonna say you're being too nice here, Price.
You gotta take one eventually.
Um, Nick Alegretti, round 7, that's a good pick.
Great pick, yeah, yep, yeah, to get what they got out of him, by the way, the starting center for the commanders, if you're wondering how things are going in Washington.
Next draft, round 1, Clyde Edward Tala, bad, bad, yeah, sucks that the injury zapped him of what he was, but that wasn't a good pick.
Round 2, Willie Gay.
I'm gonna say neutral.
I mean, he played a full contract out in Kansas City, but he wasn't like, yeah, you know, Mr. reliable guy.
I think the league is, I think the league has told you what they thought of Willie Gay.
He's signed a litany of one year deals since, has bounced around, has never been anything else than that.
Um, he, he provided value when he was here, he was a, you know, a core special teams guy, interesting profile with the athleticism and stuff, but never fully became what he could have been.
Uh, Lucas Nyang, round 3.
I'm gonna tie in a comment here cause I think it works perfectly.
Um, Trey Smith and Creed Humphrey are beach is saving grace on the O-line, there are so many misses over the years.
This right here, Lucas Nang is a miss.
Unfortunately, I, and, you know, if you talk to Chris Young, he was the best offensive lineman he ever played against, the stupidest comment ever.
Actuality, he was a rotational guy at best when he was coming out.
I'll, I'll give you bad on it.
I'm like, I lean a little more neutral, but I'll give you a bad just because like he was hurt in college and like frequently got hurt.
I mean, we forget that he was the starting right tackle that year that they traded for Orlando Brown.
Um, and I think like he looked OK there, but I'll give you bad just because like he was hurt in college and he was hurt in the NFL and he's not in the league anymore.
Um, Lagerius Snead round 4, that's a great pick.
Yeah, yep, fantastic.
You get an all-pro Pro Bowl caliber guy who returned a high 3rd round pick to you, that's a great pick.
Uh, Mike Dana round 5, that's a great pick.
Yes, yeah, great.
I, I know that again he's gotten overexposed and stuff, but to get that level of play.
Um, from a round 5 edge rusher, uh, Bo Pete Keys, round 7.
I will actually say this is a bad pick.
It's a late day 3.
They traded back into the draft to get Bo Pete Keys, and he did, he did not piss a drop, so bad pick, um, because the process sucked there, um, OK.
Round 2, Nick Bolton.
This is a tough one, man.
Yeah, because I am, it's a good pick.
It's a good pick.
Is it?
The pick itself only me on Nick Bolton as a as a great pick as a 2nd round pick.
We're talking about the draft pick.
We're not talking about the contract right now.
On his rookie contract did he return value as a linebacker.
Yes, yes, yeah, yes, he's a good pick.
We know Creed Humphrey is a good pick.
Fantastic pick.
Creed Humphrey, yeah, that's incredible.
Yeah, um.
Joshua Kado, round 4.
I'll, I'll, I'll lean towards bad, like cause round 4 is still a place that you want contributors, and he just did nothing.
It sucks that he had the medical condition that he did.
It was a swing on a former 5 star athlete , but I mean, zero contribution.
Round 5, Noah Gray.
Again, we're talking about the draft pick, not the contract.
I, I'm gonna say neutral.
his tenure in KFC has looked more like Juan Thornhill than it has been, you know, any of these guys were saying 5th round picks were, were playing well.
One year.
Yeah, I, I, I could lean towards good because like he's a 5th round tight end.
My thing is that I just think he's a little bit more lim like I think he's just overexposed in his role.
We'll put him down as a neutral though.
OK. Cornell Powell Yeah, bad UFL legend.
I was gonna say the goat in the UFL.
It's a round 5 wide receiver.
I don't, I don't know, but he didn't do anything .
What are, what are we talking about?
Most, most round 5 wide receivers don't, but we'll chalk it up as a bad pick just because.
We're going, that's your tiebreaker next time I get the tiebreaker.
Um, Trey Smith, round 6, great pick.
Yeah, fantastic.
OK, uh, his calling card, the 2022 draft class, are, are you comfortable putting George Koloftis and Trent McDuffie as good picks?
Yes, very, OK, very, yeah, that's even his first round picks, like a late first round edge rusher and George Koloftis doing as well as he has, yeah, that's, that's a great pick, man.
Sky Sky Moore, are we comfortable saying that was a bad pick?
Yeah, I I was comfortable saying it when we made the pick in 2022, but.
Brian Cook, this one's a little interesting.
I think this is a good pick.
I think, I think so .
Although boy, I tell you what, no one's PR besides Josh Allen's, of course, no one's PR has improved more this offseason than Brian Cook.
When the hell?
Did you ever listen to anybody talk about the Chiefs' defense or facing the Chiefs, and they're like, yeah, and Brian Cook back there, man, you gotta, you know, he's really doing so much back there, like he was just.
A guy, his entire time here, put together a pretty good contract year, but now him and Dexter Lawrence are fixing that entire Bengals defense.
It's crazy, like, like every time you listen to people talk about why the Bengals are gonna be good is Brian Cook this, he, you know, he doesn't miss tackles, like this is a huge up.
I don't know.
I, yeah, his PR has.
It's the big media too though, bro, they're looking, they're grasping at straws for hope over there.
It's the classic like they got nothing, so if they get anything and it'll be better, but people always forget that like the other side of the ball exists too, like they're operating under the premise that the Bengals' offense will just be good forever, and that might be true, but like also T Higgins gets hurt a lot, Joe Burrow gets hurts a lot.
Um, I think the offensive line is pretty good, but you know, Ja'Marr Chase, if something happens to him, like everything changes real fast.
Leo Chanel, round 3.
That's a good pick.
Good, yeah.
Josh Williams, round 4.
I wanna hear what your , I wanna hear your thoughts, genuinely.
I lean towards neutral because I, I lean towards neutral because he did play, um, he, he did play like on some of those Super Bowl teams.
I, I think it got worse as it went along, um, so.
I, I lean towards neutral.
What do you think?
I, I'll let you have the, the tiebreaker here.
I would have put him in bad, probably.
Never a full-time starter, but only came in in relief.
I mean, I understand it's a 4th round cornerback, but I mean, he's outplayed by a guy taken in the 7th round in the same draft.
I, I , I think that's gotta.
Yeah, yeah, go with neutral, go with neutral.
OK.
This comment here makes no sense from Peter.
According to Price's reasoning, if you did a single thing of note ever with the Chiefs, you're a great pick, and if you didn't do a single thing, but you were a day 3 pick, then you get the bump, it's still a good pick.
Um, I mean, Cliderwood dela did stuff, he was a bad pick, and we just put like Cornell Powell, who was like on the active roster for quite some time as a bad pick, um, you know, like Bo Pete Keys, he was on the roster, Darwin Thompson, we put as a bad pick.
Um, or did we put him as neutral?
I can't remember.
Darwin Thompson?
Yeah, I, I think we put him as bad.
Darian Kinnard Darian Kinard was a bad pick.
Yeah, I'll, I, I'll say so.
I, it's frustrating a little bit of like hindsight with him too.
No, I'm, I'm leaning towards that as well.
OK, all right, you said that like I was gonna have to fight you on it.
No, he was a bad pick, objectively.
It's the fact that he's like still playing in the NFL and like has played real snouts for other teams, it's a little frustrating, like, why could he not work here?
I'm not sure, but I don't know.
Yeah, I, I'm fine with that, especially when you get Jalen Watson in the 7th, that's a good pick.
Yeah.
Isaiah Pacheco This one's tough.
Round 7 , yeah, around 7, I, I say it's a good pick.
OK, Nazi Johnson.
It's a, it's the last pick of the 7th round for them, neutral, like he played, he was a special teamer, he got hurt, we'll call that neutral.
Um, OK, moving on up.
This is where it starts getting a little tougher cause, uh, well, not really, the next class is FAU bad pick.
Agreed, agreed.
I think you can make it for neutral just because he has been a rotational guy.
I can't, I can't even do, I can't even do that, man.
I mean, he's, he's been hurt and not good, um, you know, we haven't seen the full thing here.
I do, I am a little bullish on him this year.
Rasheed Rice might be one of the most difficult cases we make.
When he is on the field, he is a good player, and I will give them credit for doing something different with him than what he was in college.
Like he's a totally different player than he is in college, but he's a total pain in the ass off the field, and he got hurt , and, you know, for that, I would say neutral.
I have him as a good pick.
I, I think he's given you production.
I, I do think he's a little bit of Mahomes, Andy Reid, like, uh, product, but, I mean, he's given you pretty, pretty good production, and it, like you said, I think the process there was incredible, the select, making the selection, making him make that transition to more of a slot role, like, that is.
That's exactly what you want.
That's how you get a Puka Nkua.
That's how you get a Rishi Rice in the draft.
I'm going neutral.
I think we should do neutral, because he was a, he was a lot of teams had him off their board during the draft.
It was a known problem that he was a pain in the ass in college and turned out he was that in the NFL too.
with that.
Listen, man, I, I do not like he can't.
So if you, if he cannot beat man coverage and like his entire game is being force fed balls behind the line of scrimmage.
Now it's a great skill set to have, but I, to me, between the off the field stuff, I'm putting him as a neutral.
OK, that's, that's fine uh.
Wanye Morris, bad pick.
Yeah, bad pick.
Shamari Connor, this one's tough.
I'm saying a good pick, man.
I don't, I think his first year when he was playing as a safety, they were all pro talks that were in his future.
Now, I, I don't ever remember that, but I, I will give you, I, buddy, that last stretch of games that he played that season in in 2023, dude.
Elite, elite, I'm, I'm talking incredible safety play from Jamari Connor, and then he got moved around.
I think that's more I'm interested to see what he does this year.
I think he's usually like the leading snap getter on defense besides Bolton, um, has just been a model of consistency, round 4 safety, we'll give it, we'll give him a good pick there.
Uh, OK, um, BJ Thompson, bad pick, yeah, bad pick.
And by the way, when I was talking about, uh, Joshua Kado, and I said the medical thing, I actually meant BJ Thompson.
They just blend together cause they were both kind of the same profile.
Keanre Coburn again to what what's, what's the comment here, uh, Peter, I am doing bad 3 bad day 3 picks because he didn't make the active roster.
You make the active roster, that's a bad pick.
You draft a guy and he doesn't even make the opening day roster, the 53, that's a bad pick.
Nick Jones, another bad pick, because again, he did nothing for this team.
The, the bar is definitely lower for day 3 picks, but doing nothing will hurt you.
All right, this is where it starts getting a little tougher because we, we still need to see more.
Xavier Worthy, bad pick.
I don't know if I'm.
What does he do well?
What does he do well?
He's supposed to be a deep threat, he can't track the ball deep down the field.
Is supposed to be fast.
You said he doesn't look fast on the field.
He is fast, but he doesn't look like the fastest dude in the NFL.
See, OK, so what, so what are we talking about then?
Like the injury, yeah, you can give him a little bump for the injury, but I, so my thing about this is so many people talk about Xavier Worthy, like he's just this, like they talk about him like he's Kadarius Tony, and like, yeah, maybe you get him through 2 games.
He missed no games in college, missed no games this rookie season in the NFL and only missed 4 games this last season.
Like, yeah, the shoulder thing happened.
I think everybody just got the ick, cause the way that the injury happened.
And then like, it confirmed the priors of, oh, he's too small, so then everyone is just out, like he's not this, I get that he has limitations as a player because of his size, but he's not injury prone , that's that's a misnomer.
No, OK, we can agree there, but his skill set is insanely limited, and I think probably a little underutilized by Casey, but we're judging how he's being used in the offense, right?
Like, we're not giving bumps so, I mean, we kind of give a little bit of a bump to a player if he's played for the team.
But Jamari Connor, let me ask you this, after, after his rookie season, would you have called him a good pick?
No.
Really?
Yes.
His rookie season, he was, he played 17 games, he was the , he was the.
He was the lead, so you would have called him a bad pick in his rookie year after he had 638 yards, 6 touchdowns, and added another 104 yards rushing and 3 touchdowns, as he helped them make the Super Bowl.
Let me press a rookie a little bit.
No, you, you can't do that.
Every team on the or every player on the team helped them win the Super Bowl, but we're not, we're not giving, they win the Super Bowl that year, but go to the Super Bowl.
I mean they don't, excuse me, they, they lost Juju for, they lost Rasheed that basically that whole season.
They lost Juju a chunk of that season, like, that offense, he had all that, all that available production, all those balls on the table, and he got 600 yards.
Now, again, I, I probably wouldn't have called him a bad player.
I would have said, hey, this is a, a good indicator, like, if your rookie season is 600 yards, like, I mean, granted, he's a first round wide receiver, you would also had Christian Ainsworth coaching him.
A local high school coach coaching him at the wide receiver position.
I, I, let's put, I think we should put it as neutral because he still has 2 more years left of his rookie deal.
Man.
Uh, OK, I, I'll let you have this one.
But I'm not happy about it.
I, I think the, the if you wanna call it a bad pick, I think the, the reasoning there is like.
You knew he was a limited player when you took him.
He only had certain ways to To win But I also think that there's some misnomers around it, like you and I both agreed, he wasn't just a gadget vertical guy at Texas, right?
Uh, yeah, but that's not how he was being discussed.
You were talking about him as a really, really good route runner, not to put you off.
He is, and he was.
He is.
Why, why no production then?
Why no production?
That, that's my question.
I wouldn't say no production, like we just went over his rookie season, it was really good and this last year he was just dinged up the whole time, and you know.
I, I, let's put it as a neutral for the sake of we need to see more.
OK, OK, that's fair.
Kings Kingsleysu Maia is an interesting one.
His rookie year going back to there, you would have called it like borderline bust, but now he's a good starting guard.
You get a good starting guard in round two, whether you tried him at tackle or not, to me, that's a good pick.
Yeah, this is one of the most underrated picks , I think on the list here.
Like, you got a guy tried him out at left tackle, it didn't work out, and you got a left guard out of it.
That doesn't, I mean, yeah, it can happen, but that's not something that, you know, it happens, it happens incredibly frequently for NFL teams .
Jared Wiley.
I think you gotta go bad pick.
He's been hurt But he's also been a healthy scratch.
Jaden Hicks, this one falls under the like need more evidence.
I think you felt really good about him after his rookie season.
I remember being on radio shows and I'd be like pick a breakout player for the 2025 season, and you can't say Jaden Hicks, um.
I, I lean towards neutral here.
But we need to see more.
I, I don't think we need to see more.
I think he can't make the field, but I, if, if we wanna put him as neutral, I think that's a good spot for him.
But if he, but if he comes out this year and, and plays and plays well, well, yeah, if I hit the lottery, bro, I'm never coming back on the podcast, but that's not gonna happen.
But like, that's, here's the difference between Jaden Hicks, we just talked about FAU.
If FAU comes out and has 10 sacks this season, he's still a bad pick.
If Jane Hicks comes out this year and plays well, it turns into a good pick.
Like we've seen more evidence, right?
If you get 43 years of nothing from FAU and then he turns into a good pick his final year, it's like, OK, well, he's a guy who had a good contract year.
Jane Hicks, you still have more runway.
We've only seen 2 seasons of him, you know what I mean?
Yeah, no, I, yeah, yeah, yeah, I get, I get your point, I get your point.
We'll put him as a neutral, OK, um.
Jalen Royals, or sorry, that's the next class.
Hunter Norzan.
I don't call it a bad pick because like he's been on the roster, he just like, I think he's the backup center and that's his thing, so I, I don't want to call it a bad pick.
I'd call it neutral.
Would you agree?
Yeah, yep, 100%.
OK, Preston brings Preston brings up a good point in the contract, uh, in the chat here about UDFAs.
I do think they've done pretty good with the UDFAs, whether it be Chris Roland Wallace.
Um, you know, they, they've, they've hit that, I, I'm forgetting several, by the way, UDFAs that they've gotten stuff out of in the past.
Um, they've done a pretty good job in the area that, uh, I, I will compliment them on their UDFA process.
They frequently bring in guys that's like, man , like this is a great UDFA hall.
You know, like this year, Jay and I, obviously Xavierwampa makes the roster, even though Justin Ross didn't turn into anything, like a lot of people are like, oh man, like that's a great UDFA signing.
They tend to do really well in that area, but, you know, UDFA is a little bit different, but they do a nice job.
Jake Brennanstool made the roster as UDFA this year.
Um, they, they frequently do pretty well there .
Um, let's see here, Kamal Haddon.
That's a bad pick, yeah, and you can another 3 bad thing about the next pick as well, CJ Hanson, CJ, yeah, CJ Hanson, I mean, it's a round 7 lottery ticket, but the guy.
He just doesn't play, like, you know, he was like the first player drafted out of Holy Cross in like a decade or something.
Um, OK, this is where like, I think we should probably put down the pencil and stop grading.
Josh Simmons, Omar Norman Lott, Ashton Gillati, Noel Williams, Jalen Royals, Jeff Bassa, Burchard Smith.
How would you say this class?
I mean, it looks strong, right?
Like this, this looks like a strong class.
It all hinges on the day 1 and day 2 picks, right?
Like, like most drafts.
Berard Smith could bring insane value if he does kind of take the next step, but Simmons has gotta play, Simmons has gotta stay healthy, and he's gotta be there.
Omar Norman Lott is frustrating.
I don't get why more people aren't frustrated by the fact that he tore his ACL like before Halloween, and hasn't done a damn thing, and then there's Mahomes, who is like tore his ACL like after Thanksgiving, like a week or two before Christmas, and he's just done everything from the beginning.
Like I get it, different position, different body types, those type of things, but like, Straight to pup, huh?
Like Ozzie Trapelo had the Josh Simmons injury, like right before the playoffs, the left tackle for the Bears, and he's just like probably back.
I don't know that that that one frustrates me a little bit, but um, yeah, I mean Omar Norman and Ashton Gillati need to be good.
I, I think we feel really good about Noel Williams, but to me like it, it boils down to Simmons here and Royals, we need to see more Bassa, we need to see more for sure.
And then, you know, this last draft class is is really trending well, um, so far, but it's extremely early.
Yeah, yeah, I would agree.
Real quick, we wanna tell you about our friends over at my bookie.
Football is back and my bookie is kicking things off with what might be the easiest call of the season.
The Patriots are heading to Seattle in just a week for the NFL Cookoff, kickoff, cook-off would be fun too.
And my bookie's lock of the season is simple.
Will the Seahawks raise their championship banner that night?
I think yes.
They're the defending champs.
It's their home opener.
That banner is going up and somehow you can get it at plus money.
So if you've got a minute before kickoff, head to my bookie use promo code Arrowhead and check out the lock of the season.
Bet on anything, anytime, anywhere.
Our promo code, one word, Arrowhead.
Must be 21 and 18 years older in select jurisdictions.
Terms apply.
Gambling problem, call 1-800-G GAMBLR or visit 1-800-gambler.net.
So, for the draft breakdown here, let me do the math, 5, 1015, 2021, 21 bad, uh, hold on.
Carry the one Yeah, 21 bad picks.
We've got 12 neutral.
17 good.
So 1711, and 21.
I would say we're like Close to like fifty-fifty good draft or not good drafter.
Like, pretty darn close.
Here's the thing though, I, I think there's a difference between what constitutes a good player and what constitutes a great player.
I think he's drafted.
2 or 3 great players, Trey Smith, Creed Humphrey, Trent McDuffie.
I think those are the only stars that that he has, you know, legitimately drafted.
And that unfortunately, that that's a lot of what, um, you know, being a GM is, is based off of very, at least our evaluation is, hey man, I want superstars on the team.
I, I understand that Hunter No Leerious Leerrius Snead has Leerrius Snead has an argument when he was at his peak.
He's not that anymore, but he was one of the best corners in the NFL for a 2 or 3 year stretch there.
And to get that in day 3, like I, I think he's probably the next closest name to, like, you know, like you said, star, and that's subjective to.
No, Nick Bolton frequently gets mentioned in like the top linebackers.
He has his limitations.
I'm not going to argue that for him as a star.
I don't, I don't view Karl Loftus as a star, um, despite Bengals fans, I don't view Brian Cook as a star, um.
Yeah, and like Rasheed Rice, you know, he usually goes in the top 2 rounds of fantasy drafts, but that's because of a PPR hack, not because he's a star, right?
Like if we're sitting here listing off top 20 wide receivers, I don't think many people would list Rice except for Bills fans who um have an agenda.
And then, yeah, this last class, you know, worthy Suamata Wiley, there's no stars there.
I think Simmons could be that guy, like Simmons has that potential, he really does.
He could be an all-pro.
But we talked about the factors there, and that to me like, they needed a left tackle, they went and took a gamble on a guy who had concerns, but has top 10 talent, and like you're, you're sowing, you're reaping and sowing there.
Uh, OK, real quick, like we're, you know, I think we're, we're coming closer to a consensus here.
Let me run over some of the bigger moves that we're not, because that's the thing about GMs, it's more than just drafting, right?
Allocation of free agent dollars, extending players, trading for players.
I think, me personally, I think the fact that Brett Veach managed to keep the Hall of Fame talent here in Kansas City as long as he has, should go to his positive.
He created a, helped negotiate a very flexible, very good deal for Patrick Mahomes.
He helped keep Chris Jones here in Kansas City, he helped keep Travis Kelsey here in Kansas City.
We haven't seen some of the missteps that John Dorsey had as managing the salary cap.
You know, I'm, I'm thinking back to the Tomba Hali deal and things like that where there were some real misses.
Um, so, 2018, if you remember, John Dorsey was fired like around minicamp of 2017.
I remember being like, oh my God, they think, they think Pat's a bust already, like they fired Dorsey already, and so like Dorsey didn't get a ton of time or Veach didn't get a ton of time that season, like he was coming in mid-year, and that's part of the reason why that draft sucked afterwards.
Uh, so 2018, traded Alex Smith, traded Marcus Peters, signed Sammy Watkins.
What are your thoughts on that group?
Like that's, that's a, those are some pretty savvy moves, getting what they got for the Alex Smith trade, they brought back Kendall Fuller, um, the Marcus Peters one is really interesting too, like clearing the locker room, like Marcus Peters was a tremendous pain in the ass.
Like I, you talk to anybody who covers and is a credentialed member of the media, they hated Marcus Peters.
He would walk around and they'd be doing recordings of players for uh like their media purposes, and he'd be just sitting there screaming the F word so they can't use their, their audio, you know, like he's he's a pain in the ass.
Good, good, good player though, good player at his peak, but I mean, I don't know, those are, it's a pretty good start.
Sammy Watkins was obviously a huge part of just like taking that offense to the next level.
Oh yeah, to me, Alex Smith, Marcus Peters, getting them, both of those guys, um, sending them to greener pastures, so to speak.
Um, not bad, I think that's a, a great decision, and especially the return they got from Marcus Peters was pretty good as well.
And then Sammy Watkins, man, like, he was kind of like the Frank Clark of the offense, where during the regular season, you were kind of like, please to God, just stay healthy, and then once he got to the playoffs, you're like, OK, he can beat anybody on any given day.
It's uh, it's payday and you splurge by DoorDashing, right?
They had a rookie contract, a quarterback in his prime, and they splurged.
The contract was not, they never got the return on investment on that contract, but they had the flexibility.
2019, they trade Dee Ford , check, like Dee Ford didn't piss a drop in the league afterwards, signed Tyrann Mathieu.
That was a great signing, captain of that defense, traded for Frank Clark.
This one's actually surprising pre-pod we were talking about this.
You think the Frank Clark trade was a good trade, and I actually kind of disagree, like, uh, well, it, it's an interesting situation, right?
Like, we got what we needed from him and not a single thing more, which was, you know, a presence on the defensive line opposite Chris Jones in the playoffs.
The regular season, he's very, very spotty.
He had that uh stomach issue for a long time and then there were, there were some other issues as well, but it's like, dude, we, we got a productive player, um .
Again, they could have just went and signed Za'Darius Smith and and kept their picks.
Like that's that's the thing that frustrates me cause you traded and went for him and like if if Frank Clark's quarterback was Tua or whoever, like let's just say the Dolphins make the same trade or whatever and his quarterback is Tua, like nobody ever remembers Frank Clark for anything.
Frank Clark's best ability was Patrick Mahomes getting him to the playoffs, so then he could like turn it on and like, hey, props for him for turning it on, but like.
The reason why he got those opportunities is because of everything else around him.
Yeah, no, you're not wrong, but I do think that there's an element of, you know, exactly what you paid for, not, not a penny more.
Signed Joe Tooney, great signing.
I criticized it at the time, I was wrong.
Guess what, you won't hear other people say that stuff.
I was wrong about Joe Tooney.
I thought spending that much money on a guard was a bad move, and he was incredible and continues to be incredible.
Um, traded for Orlando Brown.
What do you, the Orlando Brown trades interesting.
They trade a 1st round pick, they get back a 2nd.
Orlando Brown starts for two seasons, they don't give him the contract he's looking for, they, he helps them win a Super Bowl in a in a year when Mahomes had an ankle injury going against a great pass rush where they allowed zero sacks.
I view the Orlando Browns situation as a win.
They solved left tackle for 2 years, and they didn't just, like, force themselves to give the contract.
Oh yeah, well, and I think the other part about it is the timing of the signing as well, where it's like, hey man, you just had your two tackles essentially retire.
OK, you gotta get somebody, and it was like Joe Tooney, who has played tackle before, although not full-time, and then Orlando Brown Jr. who, I mean, we knew was, you know, a slightly above average.
But was still one of those guys where it's, you know, a little ambiguous as to how well he's gonna play for Kansas City and their style, but that's a, that's a win for me.
I think you got productive players, um, and not at a super high cost either, it's not like we traded, um, first round pick for Orlando Brown Junior, so.
Signed Justin Reid and Juju Smith-Schuster traded Tyreek Hill to Miami.
I don't think you can look at that offseason as anything other than a net positive.
Like that Yeah, I, I might blow your mind.
Listen, man.
I, I think Justin Reid was a good player for the team.
I don't think, I mean, we saw him one on one multiple times with players in the playoffs, and he could not hold his water.
I think Juju Smith-Schuster was productive, but there's this team could, this team could use Justin Reid right now.
Like everything that we've said about Brian Cook is like kind of what Justin Reid was.
He was, you know, the captain of the back end of a defense that was rebuilding with McDuffie and Watson and Williams.
And like provided that stability.
He was one of the captains of, uh, you know, a defense that helped win them their dynasty, right?
Like Justin Reid was a huge part of that, and I get like he wasn't like the coverage guy, but that was like, and it keep in mind they didn't like pay him top of the market, like he didn't reset the market, he just got like an average deal.
Like it wasn't the Tyrann Matthew signing, but I have a hard time calling that a bad signing.
OK, then let's move to the Juju Smith-Schuster signing.
Like a 1 year deal, a 1 year deal for Juju Smith-Schuster, who almost had 1000 yards that season, that Mahomes fed on the way down to kick the game winning field goal in the Super Bowl, as they traded away their star wide receiver and cleared the air for Kelsey to be, uh, you know, his one of his best seasons ever.
Yeah, that, that's a good move in my opinion.
There's borderline no such thing as a bad one year deal.
Yeah, but how much of that is due to vacancy?
How many other wide receivers were on the free agent market in 2022 that you could assigned that would have been better for the Chiefs that you do some issues?
Oh, I can tell you it wasn't, it wasn't MVS.
I can tell you that much.
I mean, like, star wide receivers just don't hit the market.
Right, they just, they just, but I mean, Devonte, Devonte Adams got traded that season too, right?
And you know, like that would have not made sense to trade Tyreek Hill and then to trade for Devonte Adams, and obviously trading Tyrique has to be like one of the best moves they've, they've made.
I, we can agree on that for sure, right?
What they did with it, what they cleared up the cap space and everything like I.
To have the vision to be like, we are going to trade away a Hall of Fame talent and shift this offense, and like be able to find role players, and basically all it cost them was a 1 year deal and 22 million for uh MBS who was like on a 1 year or a 3 year, 11 million per deal.
NBS was kind of a flop.
I, I'm happy to admit that, but at least they didn't overindex, right?
Like they didn't go get crazy and, and try to fill that void, like they, they leaned on Kelsey and, and he provided that, uh, traded Laerus Snead to Tennessee, that was a good move, traded for DeAndre Hopkins, like this is where, this is where it starts getting a little, a little more scary.
They traded Joe Tooney the following year, signing Jalen Moore and Christian Fulton.
The Tooney trade, I'm all right with, because they just couldn't afford Trey Smith and Tooney.
They got younger at the position.
The Jalen Moore and Christian Fulton signings were, were total misses.
Yeah, 100%, and, and we're still pretty early in the Jalen Moore experiment here, but it was definitely, it's not looking good.
Yeah, if, if he's starting right tackle all year and his average, then it was OK, keeping in mind that they didn't have Josh Simmons on the roster then, but.
The fact that like we have to hype up Cleo Benson all offseason is part of it.
So, you know, we, we could do this, we could do this for hours, but let us know what you guys think.
Is Brett Veach actually good at his job ?
I will closing statements here.
I think Brett Veitch plays with one hand tied behind his back, because Andy Reid has always and will always bang the gavel on stuff.
They sold their soul to Andy Reid the day that they got on that plane with him at the tarmac, and I'm happy with the results.
Do I think Andy Reid needs to change now?
Am I concerned about the future of the Chiefs?
Yes, the past 57, 10 years have been some of the best years in any franchise's history.
Selling their soul to Andy Reid made sense at the time, and it still makes sense today, though I do think that they need to consider the future.
I think that guys like Xavier Worthy, or Clyde or other players like that, there's a heavy influence for Andy to bring them.
I think Brett Beach's offensive draft picks leave a lot of room to be desired.
I think defensively he's done a pretty darn good job.
And I don't think that this Chiefs team, this Chiefs organization is a dynasty without Brett Veitch.
I know that they were handed 4 Hall of Famers.
There's a lot of teams with Hall of Famers that don't do anything, and you can't tell me that Trent McDuffie, Nick Bolton, Creed Humphrey, Trey Smith, Rasheed Rice.
Those guys weren't part of bringing those Super Bowls to Kansas City.
They needed everything that they had, and, you know, like Drew Tranquil, Mike Edwards, like those were things that put that defense over the top in 2023, reloading with Justin Reid, bringing, like, this is Brett Veitch's third rebuild of this defense.
He rebuilt it after they lost the 18 AFC championship game with Tyrone and Frank Clark.
Bringing in Anthony Hitchens, those guys, they rebuilt it again with McDuffie and Watson and Reed, and then they're on their 3rd rebuild here.
So like, to me, I don't think he's bad at his job.
I just don't think that he's the best.
I've never claimed that he's the best.
I don't think that he's some sort of mastermind.
I would love to see what he looks like outside of Kansas City to get a true test , but we'll probably never get that.
Yeah, I can agree with you on, on some of that stuff.
My, my only pushback, as far as my perspective goes, is I think that you can attribute a lot of the winning to Patrick Mahomes, and sure, Andy Reid plays a role in the development of Patrick Mahomes as a player, but I think when you look at the majority of NFL history, when you have a fantastic quarterback, you usually have a fantastic team.
Um, look no further back than Tom Brady going to the Buccaneers.
A different kind of situation, but you divorce Bill Belichick, you still win a Super Bowl.
I think that speaks more highly of the position than it does the head coach, and I just think Brett Veach has just done a poor job of replenishing some of these, you know, some of the most important position groups on a team.
You, you let defensive line wither on the vine, even though you're investing as much as you possibly can into it.
Your wide receiver weapons have been lackluster since trading Tyreek Hill, we're just banking on Patrick Mahomes to play God every Sunday.
Um, and if Andy Reid is the one pulling the strings, which I, I definitely think is a real possibility on some of these draft picks.
I think you have to attribute that to Brett Veach as well.
At some point, you have to stand on the courage of your convictions.
I understand that, you know, when a team makes the investment to a head coach, like they did with Andy Reid, you're going to have some power struggles there.
Um, Brett Veitch is, I, I feel I have drafted the perfect analogy for this.
Um, and this, I, I think this hits the nail on the head.
First off, duh, right?
Like I've seen life without Patrick Mahomes, and I've seen it with Patrick Mahomes.
He's, he's the beginning, the middle.
The sun rises in the east and sets in the west .
He is all those things, OK, everything light touches, yes, yes, yeah, he is everything we know that and like.
Duh, right, uh, but what I will say is this refuge is a Nepo baby that made good on it.
Like, you know, you think about a kid born with a trust fund, what do they do with the trust fund?
Some kids with trust funds, they blow it all, they, you know, they, they don't make themselves into something.
He was handed a trust fund and he's done something with it.
There's a lot of teams that have Hall of Fame caliber quarterbacks that don't ever make good on it, and no, and very, very few teams.
In history have made as good with their opportunities as the Chiefs have.
Yeah, I I think again that's Patrick Holmes, man, like, and that wasn't even drafted by him, although he had, I'm sure he had great influence in making the kept him here and kept him happy.
Listen to Joe Burrow talk.
Listen man bag and I threw it at somebody, I'm sure they'd stay too, you know what I mean?
That's not, that's not true though.
Every team in the NFL would line up to pay Patrick Mahomes.
Keeping him here and keeping him happy is part of it.
He can find someone else to pay him.
He like, he is the negotiator.
He holds all the cards.
Keep like, keeping him happy, keeping him here, all those things go into it.
Now it's hard to quantify because we don't know, like, does Andy call, did you know, do Andy and breach or and Veach call up Pat and say like, hey man, are we are we good to take Delane?
Like, are you cool with this?
Like, you know, do you want Jordan Tyson instead?
Who knows, we won't ever know, but like, he can't get no credit for that.
Well, no, but is that that rare of a trait among GMs?
How many franchise quarterbacks walk in free agency?
Or demand is great.
We, we've seen Lamar Jackson demand a trade for the past 3 offseasons, maybe even longer than that.
Nothing does happen.
It does happen.
It does happen, but it's so infrequent, like, the Patriots ran off Tom Brady, the greatest quarterback of all time, when he was 40 they couldn't.
Yeah, but I mean , do you not, I mean, he was the greatest quarterback of all time, and he left the team that he like won almost all of the Super Bowls with.
I mean, that's not nothing.
Like if there was any team incentivized to keep a guy around, it was Brady, right?
Like it's not nothing, and like obviously the book's not closed, right?
Like if we're, if we watch like .
The Dallas Cowboys, Patrick Mahomes one day, then we can revisit this.
Oh, don't put that idea in my head, Price.
But we, we were, there's legitimately Cowboys fans who think that that will one day, by the way, there are Cowboys fans that believe a lot, Price.
I, I, yeah, there's also Red Sox fans who think Bobby Witt is gonna be playing shortstop for them at some point too, and that's not happening either, just like no real cheese football is happening this week, but we will have an episode every single day of the week.
Um, I'll be back talking prospects Saturday morning to get you geared up for the college football season.
It's here.
That's what actually matters.
None of this.
Stuff matters.
Forget Brett Veach.
Me and Christian got the draft board, right.
Um, so be sure to check that out.
Be sure to check out all the written work and everything we're doing here at Arrowhead Addict.
I hope you enjoyed this conversation.
Uh, let us know who you lean towards.
Is, is, you know, is Brett Veach Nepo baby that did it right, or is he just a product of 4 or 5 Hall of Famers?
Let us know what you think in the comments.
So thank you to Sean, thank you to Christian.
Thank you to everybody who helps makes the show possible, and that's gonna be it from us here today at Arrowhead Attic.
Go, Chiefs.
