Bordered by Boston Harbor and the Mystic River, Charlestown is the city's oldest neighborhood and wears its credentials with pride. The neighborhood was originally laid out 1629 and remained an independent city until 1874 when it was annexed by Boston. Tourists are drawn to the area by popular attractions like the U.S.S. Constitution, the Navy Yard and the Bunker Hill Monument, as well as the many local restaurants that can be found here.
A library that looks nothing short of a castle, the Cambridge Public Library building is a city landmark. It was built in 1888 and boasts a Romanesque style of architecture. In addition to a diverse book collection, it hosts an array of events and author readings, as well as several book groups. It is open from Monday to Thursday between 9:00a and 9:00p, Friday to Saturday between 9:00a and 5:00p, and on Sunday between 1:00p and 5:00p.
