Pifer, Matthew - Matthew Pifer, MD

Dr. Pifer is a board certified Orthopedic Surgeon fellowship trained in Sports Medicine and minimally invasive arthroscopic surgical techniques. His practice provides care to recreational, high school, college, and professional athletes in the greater Santa Barbara area. He has authored articles, scientific papers, and book chapters on sports-related injuries and general orthopedic topics. Throughout his career Dr. Pifer has received numerous awards and most recently selected by his physician peers as a Super Doctors Magazine "Rising Star" in California. His practice not only includes the use of cutting edge surgical treatment, but also non-operative use of biologics (such as PRP injections and Stem Cells) to treat injuries. Dr. Pifer's surgical expertise and innovative ideas have also lead to collaborations with medical device companies to develop future surgical instruments and educate other Orthopedic surgeons.

Shepherd, Eric - Eric Shepherd, MD

Dr. Shepherd's areas of expertise include complex orthopedic trauma reconstruction, pelvic reconstruction, total joint replacement, arthroscopic surgery, and minimally invasive surgical techniques. He holds California licenses in fluoroscopy and X-Ray supervision and was the recipient of the John Charnley Award for his study of hip replacement wear. In addition to his work with the Santa Barbara Orthopedic Associates, Dr. Shepherd is currently the Medical Director of Orthopedic Trauma, a charter member of the Multispecialty Peer Review Committee and chairman of the Surgical Care Improvement Plan at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital.

Richard D.Kahmann MD

Dr. Richard Kahmann, board-certified, fellowship trained orthopaedic spine surgeon, specializes in the treatment of degenerative and traumatic conditions of the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine. Additionally he is an expert scoliosis and spine deformity surgeon utilizing advanced techniques including image guided surgery. Dr. Kahmann performs state of the art minimally invasive lumbar decompressive procedures using the Metrix access system.

Kupperman, Asher - Asher Kupperman, MD

Dr. Asher Kupperman, a specialist in hand and upper extremity surgery, was born at Cottage Hospital and raised in Santa Barbara. He attended Vieja Valley, La Colina, and graduated valedictorian from San Marcos High School, where he captained the basketball team. As the son of two doctors, it was always his dream to return to Santa Barbara as a physician so that he could care for the community that raised and cared for him. He majored in Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry at Yale University, and earned his medical degree from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. Following his residency training in Orthopaedic Surgery at UCLA, Dr. Kupperman completed specialty fellowship training in hand and upper extremity surgery at the prestigious Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City. He also trained at Memorial Sloan-Kettering and New York Presbyterian Hospital of Cornell Medical School. He has treated many professional athletes, including members of the New York Giants, Knicks, Mets, and New Jersey Devils, a Wimbledon Tennis Champion, a US Open Golf Champion, as well as world-renowned artists and musicians.
